Urgh, I am so un bike-fit, still feeling yesterday's ride in my bones. Never mind, couple of paracetamol and an ice cream and I'm good to go.

Lovely day yesterday, so me and Mrs 3D headed down to Strathspey, then over the Cabrach and back to Sneckie via Strath Don and the Lecht. Hardly any traffic, especially as we took the road over Dava moor to Grantown and then the small road running along the north side of the Spey.

Picnic on the station at Blacksboat next to what is now the Speyside way.

The bridge over the tracks was built to take two lines, but that never happened, and then they ripped it all up in 1963.

On the way down from the Cabrach road we stopped at St Mary's at Auchindoir. This is properly old, dating from the 13th century. https://www.britainexpress.com…tions.htm?attraction=4461

Carved stone thingy from 1580. On the throne: Queen Elizabeth the first.

Made a pitstop at Goodbrand and Ross for an icecream (and paracetamol). Some sort of 2V Guzzi there (gearbox sounded even more chuck-a-brick-into-a-metal-bucket than mine) and an Enfield Himalayan present, nothing else.

Then Mrs 3D insisted on yet another picture at The Watchers before we had to head north over the Lecht and home.

So on another typically sunny Scottish day, me and Mrs 3D decided to take a trip over to Skye using the Glenelg ferry, the last manually operated turntable ferry in the actual world.

To make time we took the A82 down the side of Loch Ness (I normally stick to the slower but less busy southern side) and headed over to Shiel Bridge where we turned off the main road and climbed up Mam Rattagan towards Glenelg. We stopped at the lookout over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail, but the vegetation and trees are starting to obscure the view now.

We always like a picnic by the shore, so we stopped a little way beyond Glenelg and found a nice spot on the beach.

As ever, the sun was coming from the wrong direction...

Glenelg is a nice wee village, with a cafe in the comunity hall and a decent pub (or it was the last time I was in there) but it also 'boasts' the ruined Bernera barracks.

Now, here's the history: Built as a result of the first Jacobite uprising (1715) and completed in 1722 or 3, it saw little action and was falling into disrepair by 1795. Unfortunately it seems it can't be shored up like Ruthven, to the south of Inverness, so you can only walk around the perimiter as it's seriously unsafe.

Don't suppose the 18th century soldiers appreciated the view from their billet.

After we finished inspecting the ruin, we hopped back on the bike and rode over the hill to the ferry slipway.

Coming down to where the ferry departs I noticed there is a very smart looking new cafe called the Shore Station overlooking the water towards Skye.
Great to see new enterprise even in the remote corners of the country.

We had to wait for the ferry, but it's not a bad spot to hang around.

Bike, ferry, sunshine. What's not to like?

After reaching the other side we headed to the Skye Bridge at bridge, and then back to Inverness via Strathcarron and Achnasheen, without even stopping for an ice cream. 180 miles or so covered, and a grand day out.

Lyk my daai plek het ontplof vandat ek laas daar was.

Pie-run-maniacs!

Not exactly been the weather for pie-eating recently, unless you happen to be a Dundee-based cowboy, but the ride from Inverness to Lochinver is a cracker and it would be a shame to pass through without picking up a pastry-based treat or two at the famous Lochinver Larder.

Wanting to avoid the A9 as much as possible we headed from Inverness over to the Black Isle and Cromarty to catch the ferry to Nigg which would cut out a large and boring part of the main road.

We just missed the ferry, but parking up outside the Slaughterhouse cafe (doing good business) and waiting was no hardship in the sunshine.

Small cafe mostly obscured by massive motorcycle.

Oooh, sand!

52963860376_d727cac92c_b.jpg

It was a bit choppy to say the least and I had to hang on to the side of the ferry for most of the crossing.

More sand! Do I stop and lower my tyre pressures? Should I do a quick change to TKC80s? Frankly, it was terrifying.

We came off the A9 just before the Dornoch causeway and turned west(ish) to Bonar Bridge where we found a nice spot down by the river for our picnic.

As we were leaving I had a 'conversation' with a bloke who reckoned he was a musician in town for a session. I think he told me his name was Megarage Rose or some such. He was certainly a little in his cups, and I left before he offered me a job as his roadie.

Cutting across country through Oykel Bridge the traffic was surprisingly light which made for pleasant riding. I have managed to really dial the bike in at the moment, even getting rid of 90% of the surging that these bikes are famous for.

We made a stop at Ardvreck for a shot of the castle.

52963948629_34c468496a_b.jpg

And then along the loch to Lochinver. What a lovely piece of water it is, as is the stream and land below the pie wagon.

52963198337_47461998c3_b.jpg

Pies purchased, we then got back on the bike to tackle the road that loops south out of the village. I think if it was gravel it would be right up there in the 'must do' ADV rides worldwide, but even with a layer of bitumin it's pretty tricky as it winds up and down around the coast and through the glens.

Once back on the road to Ullapool the ride was straightforward back to Inverness. We did 200 miles and I'm happy to report the pies survived the trip home just fine and were delicious washed down with a generous amount of IPA.
^^

I eyed these routes while my wife was working in Findhorn, but sadly it never realized. Enjoyed your pictures.
