Day 10 – Noneking Day Ride 2
The second day’s riding in Nelspruit saw a similar start with Noneking meeting us at Chopperpilot’s house. Lee Badenhorst, a short, super enthusiastic, Englishman also joined us on this day. Noneking was going to take us on the LDBA (Lowveld Dual Bike Adventure) black route and we were really excited. So once again, we headed out of Nelspruit and later turned right into the bush. Straight off the bat, I got my second fall of the trip out of the way. I was following Chopperpilot on this “twee spoor” – him on the left and me on the right – when all of a sudden, out of the dust, a rather large pool of muddy water appeared. Trying to switch to the left side of the path saw my bike slip out under me and I was mud bound. Nothing serious, just rather dirty.
This day was insane, I cannot describe all the places he took us, but it was just great. Up and down steep, rutted, bush-surrounded paths, to single sand paths, dry river beds, cattle paths, rocky roads and even over massive rock formations. My mind was blown and I just loved it.
If you look closely at the photo above, you’ll see that the sky is rather grey. This was due to a nearby bushfire that would later play a role on my ride.

We had just finished this lovely sandy section and turned onto a railway service road when Lee discovered that he had a rear flat. Unfortunately, Lee had none of his tools with him, as he had given it to Saai on the previous day’s ride and not gotten it back yet. So a 21” front tyre had to do.

This would also be the end of my ride for the day. Early that morning, something got stuck underneath my contact lens and my eye was very irritated. The nearby bushfire made it worse and finally, I had to calls it quits.
Lee would also call it a day as he could not risk riding on with that tyre, so the two of us headed back to Nelspruit with the others continuing the ride.
While the others were enjoying the last half of the day’s riding, Lee and I headed back to Nelspruit. At one point, Lee pulled into this old, rundown petrol station and instead of filling up shooted straight past the pumps and parked his bike. “Chilli chips and a quart?”, he asked while getting off the bike and soon afterwards I found myself on a blue beer crate, enjoying some chilli chips and a cold Black Label quart.
While sitting there this character arrived and started up a conversation with Lee and myself, talking about how bad the economy is and how it was time for all of us to start standing together. And, according to him, the best way we could do this, would be to buy him a beer. Lee, somewhat amused by this guy’s tactics, offered him what was left of his quart. New best friends, he started telling us about how he needed to find a job and that he shouldn’t actually be sitting here drinking beer and that he would be a dead man if his wife found him. Lee then piped up and said that I was from the SABC and making a documentary that was going to air in two weeks time. He then wanted to know where our cameras were which led to Lee pointing to the GoPro attached to the side of my helmet. The guy couldn’t believe his luck – he was going to be on TV! As if struck by lightning, he quickly hid his beer behind the crate he was sitting on and politely requested that we not show this part on TV – he didn’t want to get into trouble with his wife!
After a good laugh, we were on our way again. The last 20 or so kilometres were really tough, as I could not see with my left eye, but I made it home. Arriving at our lodging, I took a shower and an afternoon nap.
The rest of the group arrived soon after and we said our goodbyes to Noneking and started getting ready for a great evening with Henk and Jana. Henk prepared a juicy piece of meat for us and Jana spoiled us with pap and wors.
