This will be a multi participant ride report. Reason being, between issues on bikes and family commitments, Christmas etc, we all made the trip down together, then scattered in our own directions for the rest of the holidays. Some kept riding, others cried themselves to sleep because they stuck at their in-laws with a broken bike and return trips were scattered and mixed.

Trip planning started like this so we all knew it was going to be an interesting one

Day 1 – PTA to Zastron - About 660km

We set off on the 19th of December, some time around 5:30 from PTA east. We had rain all the way from the start until just before Villiers where we turned off the highway. We slabbed it to somewhere around Wepener and then took a short section of gravel to get things started. Day 1 casualties: Bazinga fell in mud, I got stung by a bee plus my camera got flung from my tank bag and broke into pieces, GeVarlik misjudged the width of his new panniers and hit a bakkie at a petrol station.

Two or three thunder storms later, we arrived in Zastron some time around 2 o’clock and stopped at the Maluti hotel. The place is a little run down but they had undercover parking for the bikes and the owners and staff were super friendly plus it was very good value for money. If you are in the region, pop in and negotiate a special rate, they like bikers.

I was already missing my dogs so I made friends with this little guy. He was patrolling the hotel grounds and took his job seriously

Daar is ja.

Day One - My View.

The night before we left I could hardly sleep as this was going to be my first proper long trip. Everytime I woke up during the night I heard the rain outside and knew this was going to be wet. We met up at the garage and it was only raining very little and we thought it was going to be fine. It all changed as we hit the R21 and it got really wet.

Once the skies cleared we started to dry out a bit but not the boots. O no they basically stayed wet for the whole trip.

By the time we got to Clarens I felt that we were truly on our way and it is happening.

Outside Ladybrand we decided to just get the wheels dirty as there was going to be lots and lots and lots of gravel in the coming days. Like Dwerg said I had the first off for the trip. Lost the back in the almost mud as I came down a slight downhill and breaking for the water that was ahead. Lost the back to the left, got it back just to loose it all the way to the right and a little highside and off I went. ha ha. Broke the windscreen, mirror snapped off and a few other things. At least now the ice was broken.

Had to do some running repairs that evening with all sorts of plans and solutions coming from the guys and lots of assistance. Thanks guys.

We had a great evening at the Maluti Hotel and well worth popping in when in Zastron.

The first day could not prepare me for what lay ahead. The great places we would go and the great times to be had with friends.
