You've had a nice breakfast, busy saddling up and the ride organiser and trip leader says "Do any of you guys know the way ?" You just know that from then on this was going to be a memorable ride  :imaposer:

Right TEXC, that's your cue  :lamer:

Met so 'n intrapslag, kan dit net beter raak.  Ek sien uit om die kiekies te sien en die storie te lees ...

Ons het BAIE kiekies, maar ek sal laat TEX eerste post.

Glad to hear the everone made it home safely, some quicker than others though. Was a very cool ride and weekend besides the fact that Crab doesnt believe that when a Gps tells one to turn left you must keep to the right?. But was a interesting right turn anyway. That right turn threw everything at us,soft sand, steep passes or tracks and everything else that makes one ride.

Thanks guys

as everyone knows, all good rides and stories begin at the WIIIMPY...

so we had a Wimpy breakfast and set out into the mountains to achieve something that many of us had wanted to do for a very long time....to enter the Baviaans valley from Kareedouw side.

we had all spent the past week worrying about the rain, but on the day of the ride we were not disappointed...the weather was perfect..... no wind...no rain....a bit hot but not too hot

we set off from Humansdorp and headed towards Kareedouw. We stopped at the start of the dirt to deflate tyres and then headed up the first pass.

a few kays further on we headed down towards and crossed the Kouga river where we stopped for another smoke break....(with many more to follow)....and to do some adjustments on Jupiters bike's rear suspension.

on the side of the river there is this small cottage. there was no-one home, but what an awesome spot to have a cottage

I will never forget how we went in from Kareedouw side in the dark, those passes were "fun", luckily we did not have to do the side entry as well :)

Looking forward to the rest

we then continued up the other side of the valley where we came to a fork in the road. We all knew   that had we gone left we would have come out at the start of the Rus and Vrede 4x4 trail, but we decided to take the right fork, and explore an alternative and previously unexplored trail. As it turned out, this was the best route that impressed and delighted us more than we could have ever imagined. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

At the bottom of the next pass we stopped under the shade of a tree where Jupiter brewed us each a cup of his best brew.

We continued on and past thru a valley that was home to a handful of houses surrounded by plush green fields....and this was just in the middle of nowhere.

we eventually came to a sign stating no entry, and it was about the same time that we realised we might have chosen the wrong turnoff  fortunately a friendly farmer gave us some directions and some oil for Jupiters bike, and we continued along the "new" trail.

we continued along the tops of the mountain range and passed some breath taking views and valleys where one can see for miles around....down another pass and then suddenly we arrived at this grassy shaded spot where we stopped and relaxed for half an hour spending some quality time chatting and relaxing, and then continued along the trail until we arrived at an intersection that linked us up with the 'main" trail again

from there we encountered an assortment of conditions....one minute is was soft and sandy,.... then rocky....then loose stones, ...then hard sand. During all of this there were some serious climbs over loose rocks and then suddenly some steep downhill's over the same loose rocks....which made it all very interesting and exiting....but this required your full focus and attention to stay on track

on top of the mountain you look back and see for miles the trail you have been following, and then looking ahead again you see for miles the trail you are about to ride.

oh....and don't forget all the gates...there are plenty of gates

just before we started out descent from the top of the mountains down into the Baviaans valley, I saw this really strange rock formation off to our left. It looks like something went wrong there when the valley was being formed. I would love to go back sometime and explore this valley from a bit closer up...but more of this next time

The Baviaans Valley...our destination....can be seen in the distance

we then started the descent down into the valley with some serious u-turns and cutbacks into the side of the mountain....and all this on some very loose gravel

we arrived at Doornkloof campsite all too soon, but this sad fact was lightly softened by a welcoming cosy cottage next a dam, a few cold beers, some warm freshly baked roosterbrood, and a roaring fire
