Stunning chaps, bucketlist tippy die ne. Ek ry lekker verder saam.  :thumleft:

after a good nights sleep was had by all, we were up early and ready to go again.

at the gate to the reserve we came across a KTM recovery vehicle. I did not actually think that KTM;s would venture this far away from tar roads :lol8:

the team Jupiter, Crab, Duks and myself then headed thru the Baviaans valley in the direction of Smitskraal where we stopped for a bite to eat and another cup of Jupiters best brew. En route we encountered a fallen tree across our path, and more breath-taking scenery. From here we proceeded past Rooikraal and Doodsklip, over Bergplaas and down again to the East Gate entry to the reserve

After we exited the reserve a rather disturbing incident occurred. I did not expect this at the entrance to a reserve, but I was pelted with rocks by 5 black youths sitting on a ledge above the road. One rock struck me on the right shoulder and another on the front of my bike. I was fortunate to avoid the other rocks that were being hurled at me. Not serious damage, but damage none the less.
Incidents like this are not provoked and are totally uncalled for.

thanx guys for this unforgettable ride.  :thumleft:

This has to be rated as my best ride so far and I cannot wait for the next one. :thumleft:

please add any pics or narratives you might have of this ride

Ek sit al heel naweek en naels kou oor hoe die KLX homself gedra het.....

:sip:

Nooit 'n beat gemis nie tot ons amper by die huis was. Ek vertel my storie bietjie later.

The dramatis personae and their weapons of choice

1.TEXC - Truiph Explorer XC. You know the saying... don't take a knife to a gunfight, so he decides to bring a baseball bat... and he klapped it good. Those who remember the "Walking Tall" movies, of the sheriff who sorted the crooks with half a tree stump, will get the idee. What he did prove once again is that, with enough determination, and the right skills, you can ride any bike anywhere  :thumleft:

2. Crab - Susuki DR650. He and Duks read the manual and brought guns to the gunfight

3. Duks - Yamaha 660 Tenere

4. Me - Kawasaki KLX 650. I decided to take the Gatling gun.

The Side Entry has been on my bucket list for many years, but every time  a ride came up, I managed to miss it. This time I was determined to make it. The DR BIG had gone in for some 'minor' surgery(again) which turned into major catastrophy once again.

The KLX had been in pieces for months while working on the tank, but I had total faith in it and decided I'll use it. Last weekend I put it together, pressed the button and varooooom. It smoked and pissed oil from most orifices (not good to let a bike stand) but purred sweetly. It will do.  :thumleft:

Friday night ready and packed. We had decided to book accommodation at Doornkloof so we could go in light. We somehow forgot to explain that to TEX.  :lol8:

1. Dassie-piss Saturday morning at the meet-up. I've never really taken the KLX on the road since I got it 7 months ago, and don't know what to expect. I ask we start out at 100km/h, but no fear, it goes like snot and soon we cruising at a comfortable 115km/h. It is rock steady at speed, with a healthy fuel consumption at 20km/l

2. After a wholesome brekkie we then establish that none of us had done the route before and we don't know the way. No worries, TEX has a map and Duks says he has it on GPS. At least we will know where we are when we get lost.

3. The turn-off at Assegaaibos and we deflate tyres a bit

4. And from here its just scenery upon scenery

Ek lees lekker  8)

1. Dropping down the mountain to the Kouga river crossing.

2. The first piece of gravel on the KLX is behind me and the bike handles like a dog. I had heard they had ****** suspensions, but did not think it was that bad. I was all over the place and it felt like I'd loose the bike at any time. At the crossing Duks gets me a C-spanner, so I can soften the suspension, and I deflate the rear tyre some more. After that it went OK.

In the mean time TEX enquires weather we need any more tools... Just shout... workbench, vice, hammer, punches, angle grinder...?  :imaposer: Just kidding, but he has a load of **** packed on that bike and you'd want take him with you anytime in case you need anything.

3. Serenity

We'll be going back soon to do the first part from Baviaans Lodge that we missed, but then loop back from the plato on the road we got 'lost' on.

In reverse ? That climb up from Rus en Vrede is going to be a *****  :eek7:
