From the Drol's phone

I wonder how long a RR can be from home to an Orange Elephant and back?                  :ricky: ???

Karoo Trip 19 Dec 2013
We arrive at Koedoeskloof and meet Veldbrand and Veldblom. Quick discussion and we decide to share a room and not do the camping thing. Can you blame us after the day’s riding that we had done?

We get some cold refreshments and I check my voicemails. I have spent a lot of my trip in areas where there has been no reception.

Then I get the news, my son has been in a car accident. This is now a week after he had a slip and slide in the rain, at night, went over a traffic circle and hit a kerb. Broken rear axle and the car is immobile. This time he is in his brother’s car, stops at a flashing red robot, then pulls off, just to be hit full on, on the driver’s door by some guy that never bothered to stop at the robot. Fortunately my boy is OK with just a few scratches although the car is written off.

Back to the RR.

We meet some very nice people and spent a long time talking to our hosts until it was late and time for bed.

After we had a deserving shower,(separately…we have not been on the road that long) my riding buddy, who falls asleep before his head is even on the pillow, starts sawing down a whole forest. Retribution for all the times I did the same to other unfortunate fellow travelers (ask Murphy about Spreetshoogte Pass in Namibia). There is no way that I can fall asleep, so I take the mattress off the couch, my sleeping bag and pillow and make a bed between the tables and chairs on the verandah in front of the pub.

The next morning I awake to a glorious sunrise.

Beautiful area around Koedoeskloof. After the long tar stretch yesterday afternoon, it is time for some gravel again.

Ladismith to fill up and get some provisions. The first section of our trip will take us on tar to Amelienstein.

Thereafter it is gravel through Seweweekspoort Pass, turning right at the T-junction to go through the Bosch Luys Kloof Private Nature Reserve over the Bosluiskloof Pass to the Gamkapoort Dam.

Another hot day in the Karoo.

The trucks and bakkies come through at high speed, so it is wise to take it easy and expect one of those around every corner.

It is onto the Bosluiskloof road that leads to Gamkapoort dam. The first section is speedway, then it is the pass.

Did not expect to see an Audi that must have done these bad sections as there is no other road in.

The last section to the water's edge was very rocky and it did not help when I took the wrong leg of the split and landed up in a dead end with little room to turn with many rocks underfoot.
