Oh man, you have no idea how gutted I feel having to miss out on this kind of ride because I'm too old and useless.  :'(

Fokkit, I'm gonna get me a more agile bike, get back to my marathon fitness, and diet to lose at least 20 years.

And you'd want to know I thought about you on the ride, and how you would have loved it, but it was high risk.

Het jy al daaraan gedink om n boek te publish oor jou bike trips?

1. Our digs for the evening. A six sleeper recently built

2. View over the dam from the front stoep. For those who don't know, its where we have the EC Bash

3. Chilling.

4. Just because we bikers does not mean we are uncivilized.

They provided us with braaipacks, beer and roosterbrood, with fresh butter and jam. At the kiosk we got cold cokes. If you plan in advance they will organise most anything for you. Fine people the Lampbreghts

1. Early morning and its a stunning day. I've not done Baviaans much in the past year so was really looking forward to the ride. I've done Baviaans in varying conditions on big bikes and don't really enjoy it. On the smaller bikes you can relax a bit, give gas and have fun. Either way, its always different and a great ride.

2. Baviaans is very dry and very little maintenance had been done in the last 3 years or so. The road is in bad condition and you find these rock falls often.

3. Road condition

4. Stop and chill. Note the fallen tree.

5. Left over braai brekkie at Smitskraal

1. And then its time for thrills and spills... the 'dreaded' Smitskraal crossing  :imaposer: Its actually just a mud puddle about calve deep. I go first through to the island to take the pics. No problem, its as smooth as expected on the left side (up-stream)

2 & 3 First up is Crab, no problem, he knows the rules, enters left and coasts through without wetting his boots. Note TEX in the back ground on the 'wrong' side  :ricky:

1 & 2. TEX... he enters OK enough, the rocks throw him accross the middle mannetjie, catches a wobbly, clenches the 1200 in his ass, and pulls it through  :thumleft:

3 & 4. Duks... also does not listen, gets tossed over to the left and gets through OK.

1. Rock slides... plenty of those

2. Some road condition

3 & 4. Views going up Holgat pass. Its actually not in that bad condition at all, with the 'spore' intact

We have lunch at Tolbos and then its time for the real world again. All weekend the KLX had been going great, never a cough or splutter, starts first touch of the button. When we leave it does not start first time and pulling up the first long hill outside Patensie it coughs and looses power. I slow it down and it pics up again. Goes well for a while on the flat parts but every time I pull power it sags.

Seems not to get fuel, but no worries, I suspect a dirty airfilter. At the Uitenhage off-ramp I pull off and we say our good-buys, that the rest can make their way home, while I coast along on the Old Cape Rd.

Fluit-fluit my storie is uit. What a great ride, great weekend in great company. At last I've sort of put the side entry behind me, but we're not done with it yet, as there is the first part to still do and I definitely want to ride the Nooitgedaght part again. Also to ride it the 'wrong' way.

If you are skilled, take any bike and go ride it,... if you think you have moderate skills, take a lighter bike and go ride it... but just go and ride it  :thumleft:

Thanks to all for enjoying it with us. Wish we could have taken more pics, but the route is not conducive to it. Any case, gives us an excuse to go back  :ricky:

Great reports - beautiful, stunning area - thank you!

One day ...
