Dakar Lights

Ok, so I've got the bike now and have been on a few rides. Bit of a change from my WR, but lekker nonetheless. One problem though. The other night I had to return home in darkeness and I was very disappointed with the lights on my Dakar. Dim appeared to be very diffuse and focused in the road directly ahead of the bike while bright appeared to be set too high. Is this normal? What are the tips to improve this problem?
