Dirty XT's december mobile ride report.

just starting this now, in excited anticipation for the 27th. ill share the trip with you fellas, i hope its full of drama some minor spills and obstacles, challenges and interesting people...  :ricky: if it all goes according to plan that will be sad.

preparations have started.

new full face HJC helmet check (with uber cool sun glass thingy built in).




new summer AMA riding jacket (too many pockets to count AND look ma no sleeves today! the Karroo in December is stupid hot).



6 air bombs and a nifty new puncture repair kit with fancy pouch.(dont trust my midas special pump anymore)
new cigarette lighter attachment (last one got destroyed somewhere exotic and wild.)

route finalized.

some in route visits confirmed.

onroute emergency whiskey
get soft panniers split stitching fixed
get a 14 allen key so i can take off my front wheel.
quick lube and service session.
get spare rear tube.

Picked up a New tent. Mr price. Looks awesome though. R1750 on special. Goes for R 2500.

Folds up very small. Easy packing. Lots of room for my kit and myself. Taking a fold up bed too. Talk about luxury accommodation

First stop hogs back. 7am. First couple pics. First dirt road of the day. Seeing some New parts of pe. Totally underestimated navigating dirt roads. Game parks make it hard. Will post more later. Only 350ks today but hard hot work and a couple wrong turns. Abandoned route. Rely on spidey senses. ???

Righto. New tent set up. Swim in the pool beer in hand. Went through addo pretty nicely bar the miggies. Friendly bunch. No elephants or butter flies. Nice and early still cool... Going slowly getting into the ride. Stopped three times in fear of a flat. Happens a lot you see. Tyres were at 2 bar not enough for my load. Went to 2.5 bar before addo. Much better. More pics to follow

Left addo without incident. Crossed the tar road onto the next dirt road as per route. Crossed the next one and took the route off left only to find that road is a locked entrance to some game reserve. Carried on stopped and the next entrance to ask if I can go through. Cute little lady said sadly not but I can hit the highways too seven fountains. Miffed I decided to give any dirt road a bash and stick to my route.

On the third road success!!! Guard said I can get through to grahams town via Alexandria . Seven gates!!! Proceeded. Got to a junction where right to Alex and left??? Being the adventure wise chap I am. I went left awesome scenery, passed farms and the like all the while waiting. For a dead end or a gate or am angry farmer in his hilux. Getting nervous the deeper I go the further back I have to track. Its getting hot! Note the last sign. Will see that again.

Eventually getting concerned about progress and beer in my immediate future I decide to get onto some tar road so I can work out how far to go. Not very so far. Gettin hot. The other road hit Alex too. Pulled In and past andhooked a right towards Salem. Tar road. came past my first dirt road. Stopped and chatted to some chaps and grahams town. both roads hit Grahams town. Took the dirt one. Passed some speed cops who rolled their car into a ditch. Ha ha. WTF? Any hoo convinced I found the road no one knows about. Remember the sign? Big fucking circle!!!  :eek7:

So went around again except this time wentstraight along the tar road. Only to find. You guessed it. It became a dirt road anyway. Nice mini pass into Salem. Stopped for a smoke at the end and some Indian fella comes out the house and offers me a free coke coke!! Turns out he lectures physics at Rhodes. Bought the house as a retirement present for his folks who didn't want it. Its one of three houses in salem!!!tides is bugger all else. Nice chap chatted and left. Love these type of meeting.

Anyway. That's it. Nothing dramatic. No whittling a New piston from bark or heroically saving. Orphans from a blaze. Beer o clock was coming so legged it to hogs back. That pass just after grahams town to fort bofort is flipping. Awesome. Must bring the R1 one day. Made hogsback pitched tent drank beer, jumped in the pool. Tomorrow. Katberg and devils bellows!!! Pissed now loading this on my cell is a pain.
