I decided it’s time for a new bike so Chiccolina and I set off for what most properly was the last trip on Katie no 2. We left Richards bay quite late on Friday afternoon and arrived at Salt Rock in dark and cold conditions.
We departed early Saturday morning as the sun rised on the horizon. It started off with the temperature quite bearable but things soon changed. The route we took was as much gravel as possible via Wartburg to Karkloof. On the way we expienenced some mechanical problems, back brake slave cylinder seals failed so from thereon we only had the front brake, no problem on the tar sections, but a bit scary on the gravel. A phone call later and the part is on its way.
The Karkloof canopy tour was awesome and I would really recommend it to everyone if you ever get the opportunity. The price for a 2 hour trip was R380 per person and also included lunch. From there we took the road past Curries Post to Dargel. We were booked in a little self catering cottage called Waterfall cottage 4km off the Dargel road.
After setting in we started looking for a place to watch the rugby, this was easer said than done. We eventually found a small restaurant called Il Postino, we were the only guest so me and chiccolina had the hole place to ourselves. After the rugby, a couple of OBS’s and the best pasta I had in a long time, we braved the 25 cold dark kilometres again back to the cottage. Luckily the cottage had a fire place and enough wood to last 10 years.
After a long cold night we woke up to a freezing morning. The urge was strong to climb back in bed but we had a long days riding ahead. I plotted a gravel road all the way back to PMB and from there back to Ballito via the valley of a thousand hills. Well things didn’t quite go to plan, about 40 km into our route the road suddenly stopped at a locked gate. I still don’t understand how a main dirt road on Garmap could suddenly become a private road, well we had to turn back and go all the way back to Nottingham road. We were running out of time so we decided to do the unthinkable and got onto the N3.
This wasn’t a good plan, first speedknopkop pulled me over and wanted to confiscate my licence disk because of my orange lens protector. I had to decide, licence disk or lens cover, no ways I’m giving it to the box so I smashed it to pieces in front of him. The next stop was for speed, 124 in a 100km some, didn’t know there were 100km zones on the N3, but not to worry, there were so many non compliances regarding the prosecution guidelines I’ll have a field day in court.
All in all a great weekend, except for the 2 boxes on the N3. The last stop was the Yacht club in Richards Bay, there the guy that is interested in buying my bike had a good look and made up his mind, soon Katie 2 will be on her way to Thailand, if things work out.
