A riding drought over the last few weeks left me a little desperate, so Bruce's call to check if I am keen for a little burn on Saturday afternoon was soooo welcome!  Goldilox has been standing in the shop as an ornament for too long and we felt it our duty too let her run a little, it is not good for a machine to stand for ever!  ;D

So Saturday afternoon we met at my place and agreed that a casual ride around our area is in order, we would stick to the gravel roads and just have a jollie.  So off we went, past Polo Pony through Shongweni and down to the first waterfall through the tunnel.  The road is quite bad I thought, loose railway ballast to keep us awake, but all nice and fast track with a rock and a rut here and there, all in a day's ride.

At the waterfall we found some plastic bikes and riders smoking with the passengers of a stationary train.

What a good looking girl with the afternoon sun on her golden body.....

We were off quickly, and rode along the railway on the service road towards Hammarsdale, again very relaxed.  Too relaxed.....  So we decided to take the track to the waterfall, just to ger the heart rate up a little.  This one keeps you awake, guaranteed, and it gets the sweat glands going nicely too.  Plastic bikes frequent this track, but you don't see too many DS bikes here.  But it is a wonderful ride.

The second waterfall, not as big, but still a waterfall.

Nice couple, male and female in their natural habitat

On the way out, there is a steep climb with lots of loose rocks, about ballast size, and two steps right at the top.  Momentum!!!  And I did not take pics whilst climbing,  must have been concentrating too hard.

We followed some more single tracks towards our own quarry.  Some proper KZN hillclimbs are part of this route, always a nice and sweaty ride.

We palyed aroud at this spot for a while, some real nice climbs and tracks over the humps to work the suspension.  Good fun!

We back tracked to the road and then continued along the railway, past the Hammarsdale MX track to the third waterfall view.  This track has all the make-up for an interesting ride - ruts, rocks, stray cattle, sandy spots and so on.

At Hammarsdale, we made a U-turn and went back along the same track, and arrived home.  What a great area we live in, never more than 30km from home and did 80 km total, busy for a few hours and worked up a little bit of a sweat.

Life is good!   8)

Good to see Goldilocks out a bit. She took quite a hammering at the RR - but then - she's a KTM

Nice pics - great to have this so close to home

We've regularly ridden to the 1st waterfall on bicycles.  One day we (2 of us) go look in the tunnel and we can see the other end and it didn't look too far. Without really thinking we decide to ride through.  First problem is it gets pitch dark after 50m or so.  We get off and push. Next problem is that after a long time the end is not getting much closer.  We look back and see we have not come very far.  This tunnel is much longer than it looks, maybe about 1,2km. We also notice that there is not a lot of space between the track and the tunnel wall.

Then the we hear something.  A train!!! Vark.  Try and pedal out, no, never make it.  Then we feel the wind the train is pushing in front of it. Scamper off the track and paste ourselves against the sidewall.  Heart rate 200+.  Look back and see the headlight, Double vark this is not good.  Then we see the headlight diappear - there are two tunnels and the train is not in our one.  Whew, what a relief!!  We get out of the tunnel asap and work out that the train probably wouldn't have hooked us by about 300-500mm but it would have been scary.  There are also refuges in the tunnel wall every 100m or so but in the pitch dark you can't see them.  Never again and amazing how stupid decisions are made by "grown ups".

Hi Plot, yes not the way to treat a lady.  Those hooligans have been told what I think of abusing women.....  :( But at least she brought home the Zumo.....  :D

Scary stuff Husky! - I have not tried this yet, and don't intend to either....

Some conributions to the KZN close-to-durban waterfalls collection:-

The one at Hammarsdale in your pic (with the mirror) from the top.
The "Mphophoma" falls in Valley of 1000 hills
The Nungwane falls near Adam's Mission
