And so it was that we left a cold Johannesburg early Thursday morning the 14th of June 2012 for Botswana, three of us on 2 wheels, D man, africanSky and eSKaPe, with a support crew on 4 wheels, Darryn, Matt and Mo.
D man arrived fully loaded and after some kind persuasion from all he agreed to part with some luggage – that’s what the 4 wheels was there for, and with a dapper swipe of his knife to remove the cable ties the luggage was free, but D man's finger was oozing blood. Some quick first aid attention and we were on our way.
First stop was just after Sun City for coffee, but the sun at Sun City was not living up to its name, the temperature was around 5 degrees.
Moving swiftly through the border at Derdepoort we exchanged some ZAR for a little less Pula, and headed on to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary camp for our first night in Bots. Mo was battling a case of the gypo’s, but bravely soldiered on with some liquid refreshment.
On arrival we noticed how keen D man was to get a campsite close to the entrance (like site number 1 he suggested), but they were unsympathetic to his cause and allocated us a camp site of a significantly higher number. We discovered the road to our camp site was heavy sand and realised what D man’s concerns were all about!
Once he joined us at the camp site a well deserved beer soon relaxed all, and the peace and quiet of the bush took over.
The facilities were great with plenty hot water, and soon a camp fire in the cold became the evening’s entertainment along with some amusing commentary from D man.
Darryn, Matt and Mo were the ultimate support crew, and had just about everything packed in the Fortuna including the fridge, so we lacked nothing – thanks again to the ultimate support crew.
Day 2 to follow shortly…
