The last time I toured Northern Namibia was in July 2019. @Just Blip It and some of his friends were blackballed from doing their usual July Zimbabwe tour, and decided to join us in one of my favourite places in Africa. Come to think of it, after working in the most beautiful and sacred places in many countries across the world, Kaokoland ranks right up there with the best of them. It was time to go back to the land of the Ovahimba.

Covid 19 did no one in the tourism industry any favours and Specialised Adventures were no exception. Four fully booked tours and paid up deposits at all the camps had us at the mercy of Kopdoek & Co – a predicament totally indigestible for someone with my sparkling personality.
It was extremely difficult to deal with clients who shuffled their lives around a tour, only to be told that it is not going to happen anymore. Most of them farkled and bought bikes, bought gear and paid for flight tickets on airlines that does not exist anymore. Apart from the pandemic, I also had to deal with broken foot that lost its usefulness because of a stupid mistake by myself.

We were lucky that most of our clients refused to give up on the dream, which meant they hung in there with us, hoping that the borders open up in time for the May tour. Finally the announcement came and I am happy to say that we are going to Namibia in May and the group is chock a block, fully booked. A Good friend of mine, Hein Truter and their company Kariboo Safaris’s has taken over operations at Puros Bush Lodge and from what I understand they have made a significant amount of improvements. The guests would be happy to hear that Puros has its own pub again. Having toured with most of the guests on this trip, I honestly believe Hein is under – prepared and under – stocked for what is coming…

I have never written a ride report, and my attempt at it would be in my third language, but in light of this special occasion I decided to give it a go – and let you guys in on what it is like from the tour operator’s perspective. Elio Striglia or @Striggs on the forum will update the report with feedback from the guest’s side. The ride report starts almost two months before the tour so that you get an idea of what goes into the planning of it from our side.

Tour date:
7 May to 19 May.

Our Team:

Chantal Burger (@Chantal Burger on the forum)
Annemien van der Linde (Her of Quest fame and not on the forum yet)

Die lekker van die ride report is dat ek een van die goed bo-aan my bucket list kan beleef nog voor dit my beurt is...

Ek toer saam!

All the rider names marked in bold have toured with us before and I feel they won't hold it against me if I told you a bit about them.

Brian Harmse is the 2020 Quest winner, a fantastic rider, the most energetic person you will ever meet and I have yet to see him failing in sniffing out a shebeen along the road if there is one in the area.
Brian is a businessman from East London, was the proxima centauri of the sidecar-gate and a very good friend of mine.

Martin Harmse is Brian's brother - The one who sabotaged the inner lining of everyone's helmets with red food coloring on Quest and the jester of the group.
a Very successful businessman with a razor-sharp sense of humor and the guy you invite first on a trip like this. Martin is everyone's friend and a fantastic rider.

Peter Frueholz is one of the most laid back people you will ever meet - a Great fan of all things KTM (I will take a pic of his toiletry bag as proof) and a very good rider. Nothing is a problem for Peter and as long as there are cold beers around, you will always find him saving energy, somewhere in the shade.

Tony Petricivic is a property developer from Pretoria and runs his life like he runs his business. Tony needs to know what is happening and loves having a good time with his friend Peter.

Elio Striglia (@Striggs) is a pharmacist who happens to own a mad amount of pharmacies in the Eastern Cape. Elio is the one person I could ride with for the rest of my life. I have yet to meet a person that looks so calm and collected on a bike in the most technical of terrain. I enjoy this man's company and I believe he has a heart of gold. You want something arranged - This is the guy

Hein Kuhm is a earth moving company owner and a great friend of Elio in particular. Hein does with his 1200GS what us mere mortals wish we could do with plastic bikes. a Former International GS Trophy winner (I think 2013), a field technician and a great guy to have in the group.

Johan Harmse is a businessman from Mpumalanga who joined me in 2018 on a tour to Kaokoland. Johan's trip unfortunately ended at Spitzkoppe when he had an epileptic attack whilst standing on one of the rocks next to the rockpool high up in the koppies with @Chopperpilot and @Straatkat.
Johan fell down the rocksurface and the whole group worked together to rescue him from an overhanging cliff at a 30 degree angle.
Johan had to be taken to hospital and that meant the end of his trip. He is as fit as a fiddle now. Such a good man with a no nonsense attitude  -  he has ridden the Northern Cape with us in 2020,  and I can't wait to ride Kaokoland with him. If anyone out there deserves a ride in Ovahimba country - It is him.

The other riders mentioned above all make up pieces of the mosaic in some way or the other.
Byron was going to do a trip with his dad @Dirtrat, when he had an accident whilst loading his bike on our trailer. He almost lost his finger in the rear sprocket and had to pull out.
Louwrens and the two Daans are friends with Byron. The two Daans are attorneys in KZN.
Steven, Wayne and Charles are all friends with Martin, Brian, Elio, Hein and Peter. and they are all from the East London area.
Luke and Greg are Brians sons, and they are pumped to join their dad in Namibia.

The following takes place during this time:

Guests

Double check passports for expiry dates.
Double check bike paperwork.

Advice to guests regarding bike, gear and set up choices.

After so many tours in Northern Namibia, I really still get more excited than the guests prior to a tour up north.
I know what awaits them and that is "lekker"
For those of you that have been there - Try and imagine the look on their faces when they have to stop on the main road to Palmwag, just as you cross the Huab river, where the elephants feed next to the road, or when they take the first descent into Van Zyl's Pass, or the look on everyone's faces when they stand on Van Zyl's Pass lookout point gazing at the Marienfluss.

I was just reminded that I should not attempt to do everything in one evening, so I will knock off for now - Till later :thumleft:

I already know that I will come back to SA with only one leg but that is ok - I have had enough of this trickle charger jockey business

After all the curve balls Kopdoek casted our way in 2020, Hardy decided to put his foot down [see what I did there?]
It has been a looooong time since I have seen him so determined & excited about, well... anything.

So with the crew being all “bright eyed & bushy tailed” we are counting the days, until our convoy starts with the “groot trek” at an over-achieving pace of 90km/h all the way up to Namibia.

I am even excited to queue at the border.
Really looking forward to this trip.
