Day 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTEJ8P6gWzc

I am glad I did not see the video prior to the start of the ride as I would then have brought the 701.  As it was, the 890 was a perfect bike for this trip. At least, that is what I thought until Orrie's.  There I had a few moments.  Mostly innocent, one that had me laying down on the rocky side of the pass and one that had me precariously close to the drop off side.  What made this pass hard for me is that it just went on and on and on.  And this was only day 2 of a 5 day ride.

I had endless issues with my GoPro freezing up on this trip. At the start of Orrie, that's exactly what happened and after a few choice swear words, I decided to ride without filming the ascent. I stopped now and then to take photos of the other riders and then rode up ahead to start the process again. It also started raining again and the rocky climb up the pass was challenging and slippery in spots.

Orrie is in the worst condition I've ever seen it after the big floods earlier this year, Noraly might not have rated Sani as the most difficult pass in SA if  she did not have to turn around at Orrie..... :peepwall:  And no.... Orrie is not even close to the most difficult pass in SA  :3some:

Orrie is not even the most difficult in that area, let alone SA, as you know.

Actually it is the easiest, maybe on par with the no-name one. I've done Penge two weeks ago and my inner evil self was hoping that you guys will go for it - you would have plenty of choice words to share  >:D. It is pretty bad and I battled even on 690 with new wide ratio gearbox.

I was tempted to bring Penge into play, luckily decided against it with a biggish group and a few big bikes. Will ride it again sometime, it is still one of the most challenging rides I've ever done.  :3some:

You rode it like a Boss!

Amazing bike! :ricky:

This little "rock garden" was in much worse condition than January this year when Tobie and I rode up to first gate in just under 9 minutes, blipping over these rocks on our way to the top....

In my next life, please may I have long legs like [member=7804]Amsterdam[/member] ....

It took some pretty classy legwork to get the big bikes through these slippery wet rocks from a stationary start

I have a bad hunch that they are going to block that gate you go through into Legkalameetse from Penge / Noname. They already build two pillars in the gate so the 4x4s cannot pass and there were rolls of linked fence on the ground next to it. The gate itself wasn't locked so I could get through easily between the pillars, but it seems to me that they might be blocking that route soon, especially as some 4x4 before me just crashed through the fence next to the gate as it couldn't get through the pillars.

So maybe rather do it sooner than later. You can always turn around and get down the noname, but if you plan to make it out on the east side of the reserve that can screw up your plans properly.

Will probably not go back soon. Done quite a bit of riding in that area and will most likely ride some other areas this year.

We took the turnoff towards the Baragwanath gaves and house. It was clear that no one has been on this for quite some time. Overgrown and severely eroded by rain.  2 years ago I rode here with a group of BMWs I’m almost certain those BMW will not make this trip again.
