Last weekend I was riding the AMA Qualily2 tracks, and my 990R was overheating on the Atlantis sand tracks. Riding hard in 1st and 2nd gear the red light comes on and the heat gauge was at the top bar on the dash. It cooled down very quickly when changing into 3rd, or after I stopped.
Today I checked it, and when idling from cold, it will build up a lot of steam before the fan comes on. When the fan switches off, no more steam. The heat gauge stays at about 4bars from the top.
After idling it for about 10 minutes, I switched off, and drain the coolant from the reservoir, but it was cold as if not circulating through the engine. I'm not sure if it's suppose to circulate through the reservoir tank.
I also drilled some holes in the radiator protector/cover,  not sure if this will help. Under normal riding conditions I have no overheating problems.

All this normal? or do I have a problem?
