Battle of Platrand

o 6 January 1900, part of Second Boer War
o Location – Ladysmith, Natal, South Africa
o Result : demoralized boer loss

• The Boers around Ladysmith were also growing weak from lack of forage. With little action, many fighters took unauthorised leave or brought their families into the siege encampments. Eventually, with the Tugela in flood, preventing Buller from giving any support, some younger leaders persuaded Joubert to order a storming attempt on the night of 5 January 1900, before another relief attempt could be made.
The British line south of Ladysmith ran along a ridge known as the Platrand. The occupying British troops had named its features Wagon Hill to the west and to the east Caesar's Camp (after features near Aldershot, well known to much of the British army under Ian Hamilton, they had constructed a line of forts, sangars and entrenchments on the reverse slope of the Platrand, of which the Boers were unaware.

In the early hours of 6 January, Boer storming parties under General C.J. de Villiers began climbing Wagon Hill and Caesar's Camp. They were spotted and engaged by British working parties who were emplacing some guns. The Boers captured the edge of both features, but could not advance further. British counter-attacks also failed.

At noon, de Villiers made another attack on Wagon Hill. Some exhausted defenders panicked and fled, but Hamilton led reserves to the spot and recaptured some empty gun pits. Late in the afternoon, a terrific rainstorm broke, and the Boers withdrew under cover of it.
The British suffered 175 killed and 249 wounded. 52 dead Boers were left in the British positions, but their total casualties were not recorded.

Het die Wagon Hill gedeelte van Platrand besoek. Daar is 4 gedenk tekens en kan ook sien waar die kanone geposioneer was.

Burgher Monument & Cemetery

In 1979, a memorial was erected to honour the 781 Boers who were killed in Natal during the South African War 1899 – 1902. The monument consists of seven stylised hands reaching up to the sky.

Each hand represents a battle of the Natal campaign in the Ladysmith area; Talana, Elandslaagte, Nicholsen’s Nek, Colenso, Spioenkop, Vaalkrans and Pieters/Wagon Hill.

On the ‘wrist’ of each hand is a plaque listing the names of those burghers who fell at each battle.
The hands form a circle around a giant grave where the remains of 310 Boers were re-interred. Several of the men’s headstones can be seen embedded in the wall around the monument.

Battle of Spionkop

o 23–24 January 1900, part of Second Boer War
o Location - Spioenkop, 38 km west-southwest of Ladysmith
o Result : Boer Victory

• The Battle of Spion Kop (Dutch: Slag bij Spionkop; Afrikaans: Slag van Spioenkop) was fought about 38 km west-south-west of Ladysmith on the hilltop of Spioenkop along the Tugela River, Natal in South Africa from 23–24 January 1900. It was fought between the South African Republic and the Orange Free State on the one hand and British forces during the Second Boer War campaign to relieve Ladysmith. It resulted in a Boer victory.

The battle, collectively with its location at a hill, has gone down in British football lore as the namesake of a common British term for single-tier terraces and/or stands at football stadia.

FYI:
 Many football grounds in England in the Premier League and Football League have one terrace or stand in their stadia named "Kop" or "Spion Kop" because of the steep nature of the terracing. For a history and list of these, see Spion Kop (stadia).
 Three prominent world leader was involved in the Battle of Spionkop:
 Genl Louis Botha, first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa.
During battle of Spionkop, he commanded and lead Boer forces rather impressively at the Battle of Colenso and then at the Battle of Spion kop.
 Mahatma Gandhi, the famous Indian political reformer and spiritual leader.
He was part of Natal Indian Ambulance Corps, which he played a pivotal role in forming
 Winston Churchill, 2nd World War-time Prime Minister of Great Britain. He took part in the 2nd Anglo Boer as ‘war correspondent’ for The Morning Post. War Correspondents like Churchill tended to be commissioned officers serving in uniform attached to Regiments or formations, their reporting was intended to toe the military line.
 Ironically, it was Winston Churchill who revealed that General Botha was the man who captured him at the ambush of the British armoured train he was travelling in on 15 November 1899. Churchill was not aware of the man’s identity until 1902, when Botha travelled to London seeking loans to assist his country’s reconstruction, and the two met at a private luncheon

Ons arriveer te Spionkop Battle site met die eerste grond pad vir die dag. Raymond Heron van Spionkop ontmoet ons bo op die koppie.
