Taking in consideration that that gopro's got wide angle lenses and it was closer than what it even apears to be on the footage.
50mm in full frame gives you the human eye perspective

Lekker platvoet as hy gepark staan. (y)
👏

Behalwe miskien ‘n 990 😆

We stop outside Patensie for early lunch and a discussion about our plans form there. Initially the plan was for me to join a friend in Cape St Francis for a night and then visit @edgy in Kasouga. Was also looking forward to riding with @GeenSand for a bit.

Earlier in our ride, Dwerg mentioned that he might be able to join me for another day. We contemplated doing Grootrivierpoort and Antoniesberg Pass together and sleep over in Steytlerville. Reports were that we would not be able to pass Grootriver due to heavy rains in the days preceding our ride. At Uitspan, one of the guest said that water was chest high. We also received photos of riders going through with bikes on boats the day before, with water level clearly still too high to ride through on a bike.

While we enjoy our lunch, Dwerg’s wife informs him that she has tested positive for Covid. She had not been feeling well during the preceding days and the news, coupled with the fact that sticking with me will take him further away from home, makes it clear that we have no option but to say our goodbyes in Patensie.

It was an emotional goodbye. We are both Adv biking addicts, but due to circumstances we have done very little riding together in the past. The ride together strengthened an already strong bond and has laid the groundwork for many more rides I believe.

Verseker!
Ek het my hele liggaam “gereed gekry” vir impak. My geskree was niks anders as paniekerige bewuswording dat impak onvermydelik is.

You did what you needed to do at the time that it was needed to be done.

Dood normale response as jou brein sê ‘dis nou so’ dink ek. As my gopro aan was kon ons vir my ook lag

Standing at the fuel station in Patensie, I needed to make a decision about my route home to Nelspruit as I had intermittent screen issue on my GPS.

I still had approximately 1500km to get to Nelspruit - almost all of that on dirt, so the prospect of doing that without being able to see my route on GPS was daunting.

I decided to play it safe and take route I have done twice before. I made my way back to Elandsrivier turn off and started the climb on loose, freshly graded gravel.

I stopped for a photo or two

Vrek ons almal reageer so.

After a few kms I come across a sign that says: “Grootrivierpoort” 😈😈
Sense and sensibility goes out the window and I turn off towards the gate. I immediately start to rationalise my decision….

“Lots of people ride this route, someone will come across me if I need help”
“The river level is surely back to normal if rain has stopped”
“It’s probably an easy ride down to the river with very little risk involved”
Bla-Bla- Blah

The views are spectacular though….😈

Quite a few gates to open and close and going down the steep, rutted and rocky descents I realise what a stupid idea this was….

My hopes are dashed as I come around the bend and see the water level. It doesn’t look much lower than the previous day and PUMPING in the middle!
