I assume the 'bike talk' will follow at a later stage, and what the ideal bike for the trip is but in my mind it seems the Huskey 501 (or a KTM 500) to be ideal.

Tom, not for me to say what the ideal bike for trip would be. I can however tell you that the 501 was epic on this trip. Nothing got it out of shape and even on these long open stretches, it was epic fun to ride.  It was especially telling on days where we did a LOT of sand riding in riverbeds. I was just getting along so much easier than Dwerg and the rest. It was not about skill, but purely the ability of the light bike.

In an ideal world, I would ride my 1090 R to Okongwati, then load it on the bakkie and complete the trip on the 501.

We were so lucky to be able to travel without luggage and in my case oversized fuel tank. Under different circumstances, I might have been better off on the 701 with extra fuel and luggage options.

I must admit that the Husky made mincemeat of the technical (sand and rocks) sections. It really is a weapon for the technical terrain and Canzius even said it was enjoyable on the longer stretches.
Tom - reliability and basic knowledge of your bike is underestimated in most cases and this is where the thumpers shine. Old school, easy to fix technology is what I would recommend any time of the day. I am sure Dwerg would tell you that the DR might not have the best suspension etc, but he will also tell you that  Ri's DR brought him home without a glitch.

Respect to Ri for handing him her bike after her unfortunate mishap. Spoke to her yesterday, she went to the hospital and got X-ray's and confirmed a broken fibula - will need an operation and fusion. That is one tough lady to walk around with a smile on her face with a broken fibila!

Know she will read here at some time - Strongs Ri, hope you recover quick to be back in the saddle soon!  :thumleft:

Partly because with the DR it was constantly in the back of my mind that I was riding someone else's bike and needed to look after it accordingly. But mostly because of weight and suspension. Outright power is seldom required on a trip like this and both the 450 and DR had plenty.

But let's get back to the report. The riding gets better and better from this point.

Altwee die fietse wat jy ingedagte het is baie betroubaar - ek weet nie wat die XT se range is nie maar jy behoort maklik 250km uit die Rally te kry.
Jy gaan nie regtig ooit meer as 100kph ry nie, en die Rally doen dit maklik.
Solank jy jou voete plat op die grond kan kry is jy 100% ok

We took the turnoff at Okongwati and within a few hundred metres, the fun started. Twee sppor sand with a nice middelman. a Few rocky climbs followed shortly after and I could feel the speed picking up immediately.

We went on like this for a short while before I pulled over at a school and suggested that we wait around for the others. This was the first time we were going to really depend on our gps navigation and I wanted to make sure that everybody was on course. We waited around a while before [member=8559]trevo[/member] and then [member=12174]JannievandieVaaldam[/member] arrived. We had some snacks and mused over the scenery.

We had been waiting for close to 30 minutes when I decided to turn back and see what happened to the others. Just before I got to the turnoff, [member=4383]P.K.[/member] , Shane, Hennie and [member=18545]Ri[/member] approach from the front up a rocky climb. I pulled off to the side for them to pass and allowed for a bit of a dust gap before I continued.

Ek verskil van Hardy in die opsig. Die trip was vir my oor bikery eerste. Waar anders kan jy 300km tweespoor op ń dag ry sonder om ń enkele persoon of voertuig te sien? Soms ry jy etlike kilometer sonder dat die landskap verander. Dit was by tye baie tegnies en ek gee nie om wat jy ry nie, daar is nie dan  kans vir sightseeing nie. Ons het egter baie gestop, genoeg vir my om amper 2000 fotos te neem.


Die 501 vra om hard gery te word, hy smeek jou amper en as jy sy oor draai sê hy dankie met thrilling ride. Dit geld vir enige enduro tipe bike.

Ek en Dwerg het hard gery, maar vloeiend gery en verseker  nie resies gejaag nie. As daar iets mooi was om te sien het ons gestop en die natuurskoon geniet. Ek weet nie wie gaan verantwoordelikheid aanvaar vir tailslides nie, ek sal nooit so iets doen in Nam nie......[emoji48][emoji48][emoji48]

Ek onthou jy het iewers gesê van al die bikes wat al die trips gedoen het is dit die DR650's wat nog nie een probleem gehad het nie ? Seker die 250's sal ook goed vaar as mens nie haastig is nie. Geniet die report sover  :thumleft:
