So rol hy maar, of hoe Jup?

OK, all jokes aside, here is the ride report as promised.

I asked for 2 weeks leave but was only granted 1, so time was little and I still needed a route to plan.  I knew we wanted to do the Karoo, but which route I did not know.  A quick phone call to  ChrisL who is a walking map, man this guy is good, and we had a nice route.

We, the wife and I, packed the blue Sten on Friday night and were ready to leave early Saturday morning.  So let’s get the wheels rolling.

DAY 1 SATURDAY  - KING WILLIAM’S TOWN TO DE RUST

Route for the day.
From King William’s Town to Grahamstown, Uitenhage, trough the Langkloof to Uniondale, from there the gravel road to Dysselsdorp and then De Rust.  Today would be mostly tar, but we will make up for it.

The 1st passes just outside King

Then about 5 km before Dysselsdorp there was a huge snake in the road.  I was cruising at 115km/h when we saw this thing.  When it saw us he stood up and made ready to attack but we were to quick, I actually thought I drove over it and stopped to see what happened.  My wife didn’t want to get of the bike, after a bit of convincing she climbed of and we went back to see what happened.  I could not find the snake, but this he left behind.
Notice his marks comming in from the top right and after the incident backing out bottom right

DAY 2 SUNDAY  -  DE RUST TO SKURWEBERG RESORT

Route for the day.
De Rust through Meiringspoort, left turn to Leeu-Gamka, then a short stint on the D353, then a left turn to Merweville, then to Sutherland.

We had a great evening and was well rested and was looking forward to today’s trip.

At 7 we were already on the road towards Meiringspoort.  The sun was not at its best and it was difficult to take proper fotos.

We arrived at Skurweberg quit tired and booked in for camping.  The owners, Witjan and Elsa were adamant that we stay the rooms that were available as there were nobody else there.  We accepted gladly and bought some chops, boerewors and ice from them and had a lovely meal that night.

Here is their friendly black dog.  Ja Chris, ek het sy koppie gevryf.
