Eisbein, spot on.

This is the full technical as explained to me.
Push the kickstart till you feel resistance. This is when the piston rises to the top. Pull the decompression lever and push the kickstart another 5cm. So now the piston is still at the top but on the beginning of the downstroke. A long positive follow through kick will do it. It does not have to be hard. Dont be scared and dont dab at it. Just go for it. doof doof doof.

Eisbein, with the way you rode the GS 2up though snot. You are overqualified for an XR.
The bike is an absolute hoot. It's just begging for throttle. After watching Dust to Glory, i know i dont harness 5% of it's capabilities. This weekend just over 1300kms, not too uncomfortable.

Still I am still amazed at the reaction to it even though it was in the company of ADV's and the big KTM's.

Dude, that bike is a legend !
The XR was the 1st offroad bike that I noticed with envy EVER.

None of the guys that was with us the weekend are posers.

Uiltjie and LGF have KTM's because that's the bike they want to have for their needs, not because they want to prove something. Same goes for the GSA's. I ride a 1100GS because that's the only bike that I could afford at the time that have good two up capabilities on gravel. (And I like the jugs, what can I say ...)

And as Trailrider has shown more often than not, his bike is perfect for what he does. He could have gotten a Transalp if he wanted to (in fact if it was up to his wife he would have gotten one in April already ...)

Point is - your bike got the response it did because secretly all of us would love to have a bike that borders on 'motocross style' like yours, with all the power that comes along with a 650.

I can imagine that I'll be hooligan 95% of the time if I had a bike like yours. I did enjoy my side of the trip immensely, but there is just certain things that (even only one up) I would not want to do with the big GS. And if I do, there's still a difference between doing something and enjoying it, smiling in your helmet and doing something while going 'whooohooo' in your helmet grinning like the chesire cat ...

And when all is said and done, its about seeing the 'cool factor' in riding buddies' bikes instead of trying to find in what ways they are 'inferior'...

Well, I did pose for the photo after I fell...

+1 That's the attitude all should have!

Well said Maestro.

I know we all gave each other alotta stick about each others bikes, but it was all good poking humor with no malicius intent and IMO should be present during rides  ;) . It also shows how well we connected as a group this weekend. Nobody took anything personal or got angry about nothing - especially the 99hp "scooterbikes" that could've had a completely different type of ride on the dry and straight sections, but gave it up to travel "kuier - kuier" with the 12hp - "takeitallin-bikes".

I have respect for you guys for doing that - thanks. :thumright:

This was the first ride I've been on where the group "clicked" that fast. It was a very nice ride indeed.  ;D

No need for that 'thanks' - I was there to enjoy it and that was what happened.

There was only one stretch on the way there (just before the t-junction to go onto Robertson pass and the Plaaswinkel) where we could have opened up taps.
We did 100km/h there and that was fine.

The whole rest of the trip I would have (imo) endangered myself and Vicky if I tried to go any faster than what we did.

Same goes for the trip out after the other CT guys left and before I split off as well.

Over Cloete's pass there never was a moment that I thought that I would want to go faster.
In fact I think I might have broken Mike the Sweeper's speed behind me more than once.

No - like I said before - I signed up for the same type of ride that I got.
I would have it no other way.

Edit:

It was just a nice bunch of people.

Trailriders bike has a sidestand on both sides.
In my mind it looked wrong when he used the right stand. The bike leans to the right and i'm thinking it's about to fall over.
But what a practical feature. Use both and you have a centre stand.

Some guys like riding fast and that's just fine. Some guys like to take it slower and that's fine too (the big bikes have the luxury of choosing). What you don't want is a mismatched group. That just frustrates everybody.

What I've learned since the first trip is that it's important to have everybody on the same page. If you're clear on the pace of the ride right from the start everybody knows what's going to happen and everybody that likes that sort of ride can enjoy it together.

Maybe the mods can put on a sticky in the planning a ride section that has guidelines / suggestions of what info you need to have in your planned ride thread.
