Baviaans -Side entry attempt

We make our way to the Churchill dam via Humansdorp, we had to fill in the visitors book in case we were Taliban extremists in camouflage.

With all those valves in there you start to wonder if there really is a shortage of water in the Eastern cape or do some people just not know how they work.

Seems as if this was a sweet factory before, scrappies could make some money here ,we had to drag DD out as he started saying something like R35/kg

The three musketeers J-Mo, G4C and Dirt Dix ( None of us have ever had the guts to ask him where the name came from)

When we rounded the corner we were relieved that they could work the valves but it looked like they left them open.
Before and after pictures.

We made our way to Kareedouw where there are many friendly people as can be seen from this sign.

After a refuel we headed in the direction of Humansdorp and turned at the Assagaai turnoff for the trip to Baviaans lodge.

The road climbs up and over the first range of mountains with great views .

You have to keep your wits about you .J-Mo stopping to pay respect to a previous traveler who misjudged the road.
In the second photo you can see the vehicle above the right arm of the cross.

Our accommodation for the night.

The old mirror photo, where we came from and where we are going to.

On the road to the Baviaans Lodge DD bought the first farm. Spinning the back wheel to break traction he over
cooked it and ended up facing the wrong way.

DD had been riding in front but in this picture he is looking a little hesitant, maybe the loose sand coming up. >:D

The views dropping down to the Kouga river and climbing the other side.

At the river there are some wooden structures on both sides and it looks like a nice picnic spot with with
a locked gate saying private property.

In the haze is our accommodation for the night Baviaans Lodge.

We had pre arranged  a few cold ones with Rob from Baviaans Lodge and these went down like homesick moles.

We started to set up camp, with DD who was actually a pyromaniac in his previous life offering to start the fire.

Campsite for the night, Comfortable but rustic ( ie don't take the wife camping unless .....)

Cold showers,Flushing toilet in corrugated cubicle, fireplace/braai area and grass camping area free from thorns and next to a small stream. Some photos.

Will post the rest tommorow.

Relax boys , some of us have to work sometime. :thumleft:

Some of you are so clever you could have been twins. :laughing4:

Calling yourself spankme and talking like this are you sure you are on the right forum. :mwink:

Apologies for some photos as they are off a video clip.

Some more photos of the camp site. With a stretcher supplied by another dog which J-Mo said even his 130kg's did not touch the ground.

Arriving at the entrance to the route, damage en route 1x farm bought by J-Mo and 1x Rok strap destroyed crossing the stream.Distance 1.5km.

J-Mo casually checking for any damage.

Making sure that this was the right track on the GPS.

The route winds its way through the mountains and end up at Doornkloof in the Baviaans, approximate distance 35km for start to finish.
The views from up here are just great, the only problem is that you can sometimes get cell reception so switch the phones off.

Before any comments that guys did the route on a Super Ten will full baggage and the wife and kids I am going to say that this route
or the section we did is ridable with a big bike and some confidence in your equipment. The only recommendation is that you go as light as possible.

The roads going into the distance.

G4C making the one climb with a bit of spinning, remember how pictures flatten things out.

J-Mo not making the climb and having to go back down then having a look for the best line on foot.

On reaching the one section DD who was riding in front had stopped and come down to discuss a section of road that had washed
a hole that you had to negotiate to get across. So we decided to give it a try, the only problem is that the bag came off the bike half way up.

After walking back down to discuss with the guys the best line to take we felt the rain starting to come in ,with all the excitement
and adrenalin pumping we hadn't noticed the rain blowing in from the PE side.We had to make a call as we didn't know if the road
got worse and with some not so experience riders in the dirt and some big bikes would we be able to make it through the valley
the next big valley in the rain. The call was made and we decided to hightail it to Uniondale, away from the rain and enter the Baviaans
from that side still staying at Doornkloof.

When I go back to my bike on the top of the hill this is what I saw, I looked around for someone playing a joke but no that
was I sign from the trail.

We pushed it to get out of the rain and made  a run for Kareedouw. It was only after I took these pictures that I saw no J-Mo.

On turning back I came across him, it seems that he likes the area and bought another farm.

Apologies for the size of some photos they are off a video clip.

We went via Kareedouw to Jourbertina where we noticed the fugly leaking coolant after stripping
the covers off ,cleaning the radiator with clean water and driving around town to heat up the bike it
seemed as if she had just been overfilled. So we were on the road again.

We reached the road to Uniondale where it was meant to be closed, says who.

Dam fine road to ride on.

Even had time to try some in ride photos.

After a quick refuel in Uniondale we made our way into the Baviaans.

Nuwekloof pass, the beauty never seems to amaze me.

We made our way to our campsite as fast as possible as it was going to get dark.We we arrived
we only started noticing the damage done for the day.1 x Tupperware and a kettle with character.

We put up our tents under the cover as we expected the rain to come through in the night.
DD moved his tent out in the night to get away from some snoring but said once it started raining he brought it back in.

We had the whole campsite to ourself, or nearly-there was a camper van where we heard just noise but saw no one.must be honeymooners.

The following day was through the Baviaans and back home to PE, we knew it was going to be a wet ride as
you can only outrun the rain till your luck gives in.

A picture of J-Mo a Baviaans newbie(On a bike)

I think people riding KTM's live here, look at all that orange on their washline.

Be carefull of that hole on the blind corner between the old gate and the new gate it seems to be getting worse.

J-Mo crossing Smitskraal with the smile afterwards.

G4C saying something about it not being deep enough and that he was going to fill it.

The bikes between the water sections.

After a few smoke breaks for the smokers we made our wet way home with very little photo opportunities.

Sakkie, Jman, Herms, BigE and crew did this ±a year ago. should be a rr somewhere.

Thanks Rocky dude, Now I can finally go to bed.
(Like your bike)

Thanks Roc' It's a beautiful place to ride - glad you enjoyed it. Pity you turned around though! It's not very far from where you hit the Willowmore road to the campsite, and the road is ok even when wet.

Book it here :)

4 x 4 TrailsThe spectacular Baviaanskloof offers no shortage of excitement for 4x4 enthusiasts. Winding trails will take you from the Baviaanskloof valley right up the Kouga mountain range, past Graskop to the summit and then down to Kareedouw in the Langkloof. En route, be sure to look out for a rich variety of wildlife and vegetation, including cycads which are centuries old. Much of the scenery is simply breathtaking and although not a particularly difficult 4x4 trail, some parts are sufficiently demanding to make it exciting.
