Namakwa Flower ride
AND the score was!
Flowers 2 – Sand 10
However, in spite of not seeing many flowers the 800 odd kilometre offroad ride was really great and thanks to Riebeeker for pulling together a gathering of Wilddogs, which by the way was mostly led by Andy 660 as Herman had a few problems to sort out at home.
Being of the age where time is of the essence Flatout and myself (total age well over 100) left Cape Town early on the Friday afternoon and had an uneventful ride through to Oasis, enjoyed an excellent meal, a good camp site and a great breakfast while we waited for the main group to ride through on the Saturday morning.
About 10.30am the group arrived and immediately the mechanics prepared to help out Francois who had a front puncture, a problem that was to haunt him for the remainder of the trip.
His bike turned out to be one of the best magnets around for collecting puncture making objects and in turn saved the rest of us suffering.
About 11.30 am the bikes were all kicked into life and we set off onto the notorious marbled track to Uitkyk Pass. The road is in the worst condition ever and seems to be deteriorating day by day. It continuously feels as if one has a pap front tyre.
A photo stop on the top of Uitkyk pass and we all headed for Nieuwoudtspas and a right turn at the bottom towards Clanwilliam.
The petrol stop was brief but the shopping spree for meat to add to the braai in Vanrynsdorp took a bit of time.
The surprise came when Andy eventually opened his back pack in the caravan park in Vanrynsdorp. But more of that later.
Heading out of Clanwilliam the easy part was the 45km tar stretch to Engelsmans Grave and the testing part was the gravel on the Moedveloor road.
Some roads department official must have supplied the grader driver with either a huge cheap sweet wine papsak or some Transkei weed because the road is in a total mess.
He seems to have graded in two directions at once and in places one just bites the bullet at it is impossible to judge an easy line through the loose sand.
This was particularly bad through a small school settlement. Here he must have really been out of his tree when he finished lunch and started up again. Even the grader was nowhere to be seen. He possibly lost it in some hole.
Fortunately we all survived but from remarks later in the pub at Nieuwoudtsville some had a few trying moments. As Gavin put it: “It was a bit loose out there!”
As time was a wenting we took the chicken run and ran the 50km of tar to Vanrynsdorp, found the caravan park, set up the tents and the party began.
Now for the big surprise. Andy opened his back pack and took out the biggest Texan Steak I think anyone has ever seen.
After the butcher had finished there could not have been much left of the carcass.
It nearly took up a full grid on a 44 gallon drum braai. But it tasted great and fed five.
Andy 660 should now be called the “Butchers Friend”.
While the tough stayed up and partied the weaker and older hit the sack only to be awakened in the morning to the sound of Riebeeker's BM growling into the park.
His daughter was getting along fine and he had ridden out from Rebieckasteel to meet up and lead us home behind Trawal, up and over Brand se Berg and onto a tweespoor, which threads its way through Rooibos tea plantations and other farms.
The group left Vanrynsdorp, breakfasted at Klawer One Stop and then took the road to Brand se Berg.
then dropped down to behind the Bulhoek dam and back along the Olifants River to Clanwilliam.
Back onto the tar for a while and a right turn to Paleisheuvel before heading back to the N7 and Citrusdal.
Here Francois had another puncture, which now used up my spare rear tube. So both Andy and I were riding without spares.
On the N7 we hit a long construction stop and had to sit in what the weather forecasters predicted was 38 degree heat. Just as we were all about to expire the robot turned green and we raced for Citrusdal and some refreshments.
Unfortunately Kardosie road side restaurant does not supply the type of refreshments required so we had another 40km ride to Piketberg and the Spur.
Lunch over the group split up and we all headed for home.
All in another really great ride with a fine group of Wilddogs.
Unfortunately not many flowers but great offroad riding.
Thanks to all especially Andy 660 for his lead, Bradley for sweeping sometimes and Riebeeker for making the ride possible.
