Thick soft sand!! Did you guys take closer pics of the giraffes?
God to see a number of wildlife in the area.
Any big cats?

I think Hardy saw a cheetah on the way to Opuwo and a couple more stories to come....

I was taking pics with my phone - my camera's battery went flat earlier that morning, so close-ups were not possible
We had some feline visitors on the trip, but we were left with tracks and stories only...... :peepwall:

Janco, Steff and myself, with PK, Shane and Hennie trailing us were about 40km outside of Palmwag en-route to Opuwo, when a Cheeta crossed the road in front of us. The feline stopped in the road as I climbed on the brakes.
The cat then nonchalantly crossed the road, turned around as if it wanted to say thank you for stopping, and then disappeared into the long grass.
I have never seen a Cheetah in this area and this was something special.
Steff and Janco tried to take a picture but we were a little too late.

I'll let Canzius and Jaco take the cat stories from here.

The Specialised Team prepared a feast that evening and everybody commented on the mouthwatering steak they served us. Janco and Steff selflessly drove back to Manchester FC Tavern for some beers. Great bunch of people and a memorable night around the fire.

Hardy briefed us about Steff at the start of this trip. Steff apparently has an aversion for big cats, snakes, elephants........and the list goes on. Hardy and Janco were hell bent on exploiting his phobias on this trip. They would put rubber snakes in his bed, make fake lion spoor in the sand and zip tie his tent zippers shut while playing while playing animal sounds over the car stereo. When we woke up the next morning and there was talk of Leopard spoor in the camp, I initially laughed it of as another of Hardy's pranks, designed to unnerve Steff. Before the trip this link was posted on the Whatsapp group :

Further investigation showed large leopard track around the camp from the previous night. I was genuinely unsettled by this as Dwerg and I (and the rest of the guys and girls) had been sleeping out in the open with no barrier to protect is from a possible attack. And then it dawned on us...... we all had Barry to thank for still being alive as I'm almost dead certain that his violent snoring deterred the bloodthirsty  predator. I wanted to run up to Barry and hug him, but he had clearly distanced himself from me since I rode over him on Heartbreak Hill.

Awesome RR. I fear I am going to to be spending plenty time  over the next day or so on this thread drooling over the pics you're going to post of Puros
One of the most incredible places on the planet

Hoe verlang ek nou  (don't know an english expression that says the same thing really)

Absolutely brilliant RR and pics ... am loving it

Brings back so many good memories from my trip there in March this year with Xpat and Straatkat

DAY 7 - REST DAY IN PUROS

The rest day was a very welcome change in routine and it was lekker not having to jump up at the crack of dawn to pack, eat and leave in time. I walked around camp trying to find out exactly where the leopard had been during the night.

The plan for the day was to do a loop which included Puros Canyon. There had been reports that Jabu, an aggressive elephant who had killed tourists in the past, was in the canyon with some cows and a calf. This presented a serious risk for a big group and it was decided that we would venture into the canyon to get a feel for the place and turn around without passing through it.

The Booty Boeties dressed up for the special occasion.... :3some: I didn't do National Service as a laatie but was entrusted with the 2way radio. I got moerava confused with "10-4....Copy...... Hardy vir Canzius....." ;D

In high risk areas the Cruiser would go ahead and make sure that we would not encounter the elephants on a blind turn or in a thick brush

One of the most incredible places on the planet

Hoe verlang ek nou  (don't know an english expression that says the same thing really)

Thanks guys!

We contemplated a fake elephant charge to really watch the guys on their bikes do the elephant turn and make a run for it, but decided against it.
The Canyon can be a dangerous place with Jabu stomping his ground in there.
There was no way however, that these hooligans were not going to see it and therefor the decision to visit it.
