Tow Strap Advice needed

We had a fuel problem that we couldn't solve on one of the bikes this weekend and of-course no one had a tow strap  :happy8:
Question one, which tow rope is best (webbing, rope...)?  What length should it be (distance between bikes)?
And most importantly, which is the best and safest place for connecting the tow rope to the bikes?

Any advice or tips from guys that have towed before  :thumleft:
