Day 3  Grunua to Solitaire

With my confidence shattered the previous day on that last piece of gravel, I was a little worried for the day ahead.
Today would mostly be gravel, from Grunua to Seeheim, Goageb, Betanie, Helmeringhausen, Maltahohe and then Bullsport.
We were also hoping to meet some of the Nam bash attendees on route.
The day started with excellent gravel highways and soon I was feeling comfy and the kilometres were ticking off.

Some scenery on route to Seeheim.

It was time for a break and just to take in the awesome scenery.

The road was still in a good condition, but I still felt a little uneasy around corners, something just did not feel right.  Something I had to sort out before I get to the heavy stuff up north.

We stopped in Helmeringhausen for a welcome brekkie at a reasonable price.

We were refuelled and ready for the road.  On the road towards Maltahohe we saw the two bikes and I immediately knew it was Heimer, I did however not know who the second biker was.  Soon we were introduced to Moeder Yster.  What a pleasant surprise to see a familiar face and to meet a new WD so far from home.  We chatted as if there was no tomorrow.  Moeder Yster, it was a real pleasure to meet such a pleasant and friendly person like you, we hope to see soon.

All good stuff must come to an end and it was time to say good bye.  Safe travel fellow dogs.

Another rest on route towards Bullspoort.

Heimer told us about a place where they camped the previous night, so we were heading in that direction, and low and behold, as we came around a corner we saw this red bike standing next to the road, and once again I knew immediately knew the owner, Road Hog.  I could gather from previous post on the Nam bash thread that he would be travelling on the same day in the opposite direction as what we were.

He was on his way to the bash and was heading for Helmeringhausen for the night, but the little XR was giving him problems, so we decided to go to Solitaire and from there he would make other plans.

Bullspoort were we would have stayed for the night, but plans changed and we had a fellow dog to help.

The XR was running but you could clearly hear her misfiring.

We reached Solitaire without further hiccups.

Road Hog phoned his wife to bring his African Twin through from Walvisbay, some 200km away, leave the AT with him so that he can attend the Nam bash with it, and his wife would go back to Walvisbay the following morning with the XR.  Instead his friend volunteered to bring his AT to Solitaire.  In the mean time we had a nice cold one, chatted like old friends and pitched camp.

While we waited for Road Hog’s friend, we started the braai.

Road Hog’s friend, Robert (but he told me he is Roberto) and his lovely wife Margaret arrived with the AT, we offloaded the Twin en reloaded the XR.

After the loading they had a grub with us and we chatted for a while.  They went back to Walvisbay that same night.  What true friends they are.  We kept contact with them throughout our whole Nam trip.  Another story that I will tell later.
After they left we still chatted for a while and Johan, (Road Hog) had a shower and we called it a night.

Before we went to bed, my wife washed the dishes.  Now so many people always asked me if the kitchen sink is also packed on the S10, here is the proof that it is also packed.  Once folded it fits in the little pouch.

Day 4 Solitaire to Windhoek

Although the south of Namibia is also a beautiful area to explore, we were rushing up to get to Windhoek, visit our family and then head to the north were our actual exploring will begin.

Today will be a fairly easy and short cruise from Solitaire to Windhoek via Remshoogte.

We heard that Roberto and Margaret arrived safely in Walvisbay with the XR.  Road Hog enjoyed a cup of coffee with us and it was time to say our good byes.  He was on his way to the Nam bash and we were on our way to Windhoek.  It was really great meeting you, my friend, safe travelling.

We also packed and were on the road again.
The old wrecks at Solitaire

On the road to Remshoogte

On route we stopped in a dry riverbed and made a brekkie from to leftover buns and braai from the previous night.  Before we left Solitiare we bought an apple pie as pudding.

The road up Remshoogte was in really good condition with the odd loose gravel, but once again I felt something wrong with the bike.  As I went around corners it felt as if the bike did not want to turn.  Once I got onto the C26 that had a bit of loose gravel and sandy parts the bike once again became uncontrollable.  I was blaming the new front tyre for the problem and decided there and then that I would replace the front tyre in Windhoek.  I battled the last 80 odds kays to Windhoek and once in Windhoek I went straight to the Yamaha dealer.

Yamaha dealer in Windhoek

On our way to Windhoek I realised that I replaced my links on the back shock.  This was done for a greater clearance on the bike for the rocky sections that we would encounter up north.  I wondered if that could not be part of the problem, as the back was lifted and the front was still standard.  My concerns were confirmed by the dealer as they only recommend that the back be lifted by not more than 5mm.  They tried to get the original links from SA but they did not have in stock.  I went to an engineering place who engineered other links to the same length as the originals.  We also noted that the pannier brackets broke by the joints.  I made slugs and welded them to all the joints.  This all happened in our 5 day stay in Windhoek with family.

We enjoyed our stay and visit at our family and were well rested for the rest of our trip.
Day  5,6,7 and 8 were spent in Windhoek and it was time to be on the road again.

Day 9 to follow.
