One can probably use baking soda but CamelBak mos sells the "real macoy" for an exorbitant price. We won't die if not disinfected but it helps to keep the water tasting like potable water and not putwater.That's what they say.

We were burping chlorine fumes!
My backpack with bladder, empty or full, goes in the cool dark cupboard. Before a ride I top it up. I may rinse if I added cool drink to the water on the previous ride.
Nothing like silicon-aged water on a long ride

It slows the bacteria down, but does not kill it.

Add Milton, shake and let stand 30 min, pour gunk out, rinse with clean water and there you go.
