Did the wartrail two years ago I think. It is farking steep, with lots of loose boulders, with lots of dongas etc to catch you out. One of the routes I did which had the most "Oh Fark" moments per m

I loved that section but let's wait for Piet's version  ;)

There is also another route from Tiffendell to Naudes nek which I want to go try out. Apparently hasn't been maintained for years

Right, day two, and this time for a validated over dramatized report, for a newbie... this will be a long tale, but I promise the only one from me in this ride report, it was one hell of a day for me...

Because of the distance we had to travel on day 2 (and a jagermeister or 2 too many at hotel Zastron) we slept a little later than usual, we slabbed it on a few roads with some nice scenery and then through a few villages with cars, goats, people and trucks as scenery.

When we turned into our first gravel pass, I thought “right... time for your big boy pants serpie”. I was nervous, really nervous to be honest. Soon the mountains started closing in around us, a beautiful river appeared to our left as a constant companion, the roads started to narrow and twist with more consistency. GeVarlik and I were lagging behind as we were not very experienced on the loose stuff. Poor old CrazyHorse babysat us while the daredevils Dwerg and Batch zoomed ahead, teasing me with how much fun it looked to twist through these gravel bends as if it was a tarmac racecourse...

The road went deeper into the mountains, the hills sky’d ever upwards and the river wider. A euphoric feeling started to grow in me, the same feeling I can vaguely remember as a young boy discovering the open field close to our house and I thought “I cannot think of any other place I’d rather be”. Everything was a new wonder ready to be discovered. So when we caught up with Dwerg and Batch where they stopped to stretch some legs, enjoy the fresh air and a cigarette, hehe, I decided this opportunity shall not be wasted, I led and Batch and I went for a swim in the river, it was absolute bliss and hands down my favourite moment of the trip!

The scenery morphed but stayed as breath taking as the first stretch, the road went through small villages and dwellings, mountain people riding their horses, old ladies looking at our bikes as if it was alien ships and we started climbing to Landean’s Nek’s summit (well the roads’ summit if you want to be technical). We descended and the vegetation became more lush. After a particularly beautiful part we got to a gate that led up a challenging looking hill with rocks, ruts and a drop off on the left... I stopped and Ge’Varlik said “wat is hierdie besigheid”, I said, “no man, it looks like a bit of fun”... O retrospect is a sonnofabitch...

I remembered I had my big boy pants on and started the climb, it went quite well for a while, and I enjoyed it but when I hit my first biggish rock that made the bike jump abnormally to the left I panicked and target fixated on the drop off to the left, I tried to get my focus point back to the top of the hill but it was too late, so I chose the only option that would stop me from tumbling down the side for a 30m summersault joyride with my bike, so I aimed  for a sturdy looking bush and wedged my bike in it... The guys eventually came walking down to help. I got back on the bike, very rattled and made it up the hill to the first part where it was flat enough to stop the bikes. I stood and rode to the next stoppable bit but the cliff and ruts grew deeper, the road rockier and narrower, it was too nerve racking so I sat and ‘walked’ the bike up the steep hills, killing my clutch, to one point were my nerves gave in. I asked dwerg to ride my dakkie up a particularly scary looking bit, and of course he made it look like the easiest thing in the world... I can’t even begin to explain how great I felt about myself at that moment...

I got on my bike again and rode the last bit with steely determination and slightly soiled pants sweating buckets full of stress! I have never in my life felt so relieved when I got to the top of the mountain and things flattened out! We rode on but I was still rattled. I fell again, up a hill not nearly as steep as the first one and then Dwerg decided to baby me and ride behind me... That is when I fell for the third time that day... Another fairly easy flat hill with rocks, but this time I did it properly, going of the road completely, ending up between rocks. It took all of us to get my bike out and I rode on... at snail pace...

Finally the descend into Rhodes where we had to spend the night because of our (my) slow progress. But the fun and games were not finished yet, no more falls, but the way down was one of the most insane roads I have ever seen, thank god it was a cement road, the steepest road I have ever driven up or down, one hairpin after the next in quick succession and a ridiculously steep and high drop off on the right, one small mistake and you are dead, not overdramatized for effect, DEAD like disco! It was awesome though... no rocks, no ruts, no unpredictability and I did it with relative ease, concentration levels of a virgin disarming his girlfriends bra though!

Eventually we reached Rhodes, and what a magical place, nested within a 360 degree mountain range, with only a few dirt passes that will get you there to ad to the drama of the small town (31 permanent residents). We decided to camp and went for food and drink at the Hotel. I licked my wounds, nursed my ego, made some jokes, drank some shots, ate some pizza and reflected with a special bunch of guys, on one of the best, worst, exciting, depressing, easiest, toughest, scariest, most relaxing, epic, memorable days of my life!!!

Day Two

I will kepp this short as I think you all get the picture. Just a few things I recall for the day.

That morning i think we woke up more because of the smell of our wet boots in the room than the alarm. Very excited and yes like Gevarlik said feeling like true adventurers being filmed on our way out.

The ride for the day would be one of the best I have been on. I just love that area and the mountains are for lack of a better word just MAJESTIC!!

I nearly got taken out by an army truck seamingly training for the 2014 Dakar on the way up Lundeans as you will see on the photo posted by Crazyhorse. It was a blind corner to the right and luckely for once I was on the outside line and swerved to left and missed it by a whsky, ha ha. This got the heart rate up!!!

They forgot to mention that we ran out of water on that pass to Tiffendale but Crazyhorse found a nice mountain stream with the best water in the world. Even sweeter that the water we use to have on the farm in the Free State. After the firts section of that pass i said no way I am going down this I would rather go Up,ha haha.

At the top on the way to Rhodes I was riding in front with Gevarlik behind me. I stopped to find Gevarlik was not behind me anymore and looked back just in time to see that he had fallen on a very grily right hand corner. When he got to me i just laughed en he smiled and shook his head. This after getting all the way up to Tiffendale without almost even putting a foot down.

The beers were great at Rhodes. Great people and town.

The next day we had a long way to go.

Just have a look in my last photo of how accomodating the people were towards Dwerg in the mens, ha ha ha

I have to mention how impressed I was at how easy GeVarlik went up the hills with his tupperware, no drama, no fuss! Just Gggg'Vvvvarlik!

And thanks to Dwerg, Batch, GeVarlik and CrazyHorse for their patience, walking up and down the steep hills... a lot... and all the motivation they gave me!

Here's a few more pics

Wel gedaan Serpie!

Dis hierdie dinge waaruit mens leer een van die dae gaan jy vir daardie bulte lag en hulle maklik uitry! Well done! :ricky:

Day 3 – Rhodes to Addo – kms unknown

My track log for the day got full and reset itself around 50kms before Addo so can’t share that info with you guys. Basic route was from Rhodes to Maclear via Naude’s nek and Potrivier pass. From there Bazinga and I headed for Bastervoetpad and the rest headed straight for Elliot where we all planned to meet up again. From Elliot we slabbed all the way to Addo via Queenstown, Cala, Fort Beaufort, Grahamstown.

Bastervoetpad was top of my list for this trip. Even though we were now half a day behind schedule and had a lot of riding to do for the day, Bazinga and I decided we would give it a go. After heading to Bastervoet from Ugie, I broke the only rule I set before the trip which was if there was ANY mud on the way in, we would immediately turn around and skip it. Well, there was plenty of mud on the way up and we carried on regardless until we eventually got stuck. The pass was very badly washed out and muddy. I walked a section from where we got stuck to see that the mud only got much worse around the next corner, some of it so bad that I sank to the top of my boots and had to battle to free myself. Being so far behind schedule, we didn’t have time to fight with mud and decided to turn around and head back down. We eventually left Elliot at 13:30 with 450kms of riding left to get to Addo.

Two very optimistic riders, not knowing what’s to come

This water crossing was actually a lot  trickier than it looks. The first section was washed away and about waist deep with only a narrow pile of rocks making the crossing possible. One mistake to either side and you go swimming

Lovely riding and scenery

Photos don’t do the mud or the angle justice but my bike sank down to the swing arm the second I hit this mud. It also caught me completely by surprise because the surface only appeared damp until you ride over it and instantly sink like a rock in a pond. We eventually had to dig a trench behind my bike just to get it DOWN the hill
IMG_1138_zps32329f15.jpg

Although we never made it over, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The pass was just challenging enough while still being rideable (up to where we got stuck of course  ;D ). Much less newby friendly than Bidstone pass though

After a good rest at our instant-camp in Rhodes village at the end of a bruising day 2, we set off bright and early for Naudesnekpass on the way Maclear. The night before we got some pretty conflicting information regarding the condition of Bastervoetpas, GeVarlik, Serpie and I decided to take the "straight" route through Naudesnekpass to Maclear and on to Elliot, while Dwerg and Bazinga decided that everyone must surely be mistaken about the real condition of the pass  ;) and they decided to take it on. I volunteered to nurse a nerve-shot Serpie via the easier road, but lert me admit it- when I heard "mud" and KTM guys turning around, I decided quietly I am skipping that one!

The ride up to Naudesnekpass was grand, but on the down end there was a couple of sneaky rocky areas that added just enough of a surprise element to the section to keep you well awake!

The rest of the day disappeared in a blur as we raced to get to Addo. I guess we did over 500km that day. Addo was top and our man John was a true host.
Tired but satisfied... that is all I could say of the end of day 3!!

Just a few photos of this day:

Day Three- My View

We got up pretty early that morning seeing that we had a very long way to go for the day and Dwerg wanted to do Bastervoetpad.

After getting to the top of Naudes nek Dwerg and I had to pick up the pace a bit seeing that Bastervoetpad lay ahead and we did not know what to expect. Dwerg was cruising along the gravel roads and felt like I had to push pretty hard to keep in touch. It was a very enjoyable ride even though there was not much time to take photos and so on.

By the time we got close to Batervoetpad the nerves started building up. I am pretty new to this DS riding so felt a bit worried. Like DWerg said we had a rule that if we get mud on the entrance of Bastervoetpad we are turning back as we had a long way to get to Addo still.

Well we got to the gate of Bastervoetpad and had to deal with some mud even on the way to the gate. I felt a bit relieved as I thought we were going to turn around because that was the rule. But Dwerg kept on going so I got my mindset right and accepted the challange. Some parts are pretty good and easy to ride but then you get to sections where you have to go really slow climbing up rocks, over ditches and so on. I was very happy with the way I handled the bike on these technical sections and the way my Triumph handled it. I only had one off on this road at the top. I tried to get over a big rock and landed on the bashplate and because of the angle and everything my feet could not touch the ground and I just fell over to the side. It took me and Dwerg more than an hour to get the bikes out of the mud and turned around. Now we knew we had to go through everything again on the way down. We made pretty good work of it though and soon we were back on the tar and heading towards Elliot. We thought we had fallen behind the other guys alot and just stopped for fuel and a quick cooldrink and pushed on to Addo.

By the time we got to Addo we had found that the other guys werent there yet but not long after they arrived. Casting From Turd made us feel very welcome and we enjoyed a great evening at the Orange Elephant. Everybody was pretty tired after this serious day of riding. Our bikes and clothing were really starting too look like DS bikes being used as they are supposed to be.
