n Lekker "rustige" 3 dag Amageza deur die Karoo...

I check Google Maps on my phone (downloaded maps), and it says Bike X is 9kms away, so I turn around, take the turnoff and ride, weight forward, keeping to 40-50km/h

The weekend warrior crowd either has not reached the tented camp/pub yet, or is only coming through on Saturday, and only 2 or 3 other riders/campers lounge around.
I quickly down to small Cokes and explain my dilemma, and luckily they have spare tubes available :) Just not an 18" it seems, so I choose a 19". But no, they must have 18" they reckon, and after a bit of scratching they find one. I'm in a heck of hurry so I just grab it, fit it, pump the wheel, and... notice that there is a very soft hissing sound coming from the rear tyre 🤦‍♂️ NOT changing that thing again! So I pump it to 2.8bar, down 2 more Cokes, pay, try again unsuccessfully to get a whatsapp through (no internet service on their wifi - the wind was pumping) and check the pressure again (still around 2.75 bar) and set off - 1st destination Tankwa Padstal and then the wide gravel to Karoo Poort.

I gun it down the narrow road at around 120, stop at Padstal and check the pressure - 2,7bar
Swing onto the gravel highway and keep the speed around 120-130 until I get to Karoo Poort 38km further on, where the gravel stops. Check the pressure - 2,5 bar, so I reckon I can do the last 50km no problem. It is dusk already, and I take the tar, keeping north of 130 everywhere except around the sharp bends - Badger does not feel that lekker loaded up around sharp turns at speed with D606's front and rear, but very happily keeps 140 everywhere else.
Coming down the last pass before Ceres I take a last pic of the sunset next to the road, and roar off again, and only slow down when I hit the 80km/h sign outside town - where the rear wheel suddenly starts fishtailing on me, again :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
The song "Angels above me" from Stick Figure comes to mind at this stage. By now nothing gets to me, so I stand up and slowly roll into town like that, to the Shell garage, my go to stop there.

I quickly make sure that everyone knows I'm safe, but very very late at the very least, and go inside to order a cappucino while I weigh up my options. It is 8:10pm, and at this stage I really do not even feel like looking for a tube, trying to patch the existing one, or much of anything else.
Ulandi very kindly and very quickly offers to come and pick me up in Ceres - bless her forever (she might be a keeper  )
So I arrange with the garage to store my bike for the night, remove the rear wheel to take with me, change into cleaner, more comfortable clothes and settle down to wait for her. She pulls up around 9:45pm, we get more coffee, load everything and head home, finally arriving around 11:15pm.

The next day, Saturday, I quickly chatted to Marie at Just Bike Tyre, but they were waiting for stock of the 140/80/18 Mitas E07+'s, so I just get a new tube, new patch and solution and a few other bits, and grabbed the Kenda K60 scout lying in the garage (actually a 150 to fit Bliksem). One of my workers drove with me back to Ceres, where I quickly fitted the tyre and tube (it was actually a 16" they gave me at Bike X🤦🏻🤣, and I was too fed up to confirm and care when I initially said it looked a bit smaller - they were very eager to assist though, so kudos to them)(the K60 actually went on quite easily with the help of a bit of WD40 on the bead), pumped it and confirmed that it was NOT leaking air in ANY way.
Soon after I stopped at home safely. And the rear tyre is still hard 👊🏼

Thank you for the RR and taking the time to write & share - what lekker roads!
I must really get down that way sometime!

Out of interest - what was the longest distance between fuel on your route - approximately - for I do not have the LR tank....

You should - some really awesome riding around here - and there are some more technical and even more scenic routes obviously :D

Eish, the fuel thing I will check out for you since I dont really pay that much attention usually.
But if range is really a problem there are mostly options all over wrt supply - with a 220km standard range and maybe an extra 1 or 2 2L bottles of petrol you'd be able to go pretty much everywhere

Cheers - dont hassle - I also have a 5-litre side-tank, good for another 100km at least - and I will get a couple of 3L bladders for anotehr trip, so I am sure its all good!

Great report and lovely trip. That fun with the tyre is what you'll remember for a long time.

Fun? Fun!? You have a sick sense of humour DeeDub 🤬

But okay, it didnt really actually bother me all that much. I had an incredible trip, with some really mind blowingly awesome experiences, and I just decided that I will not let that minor hassle take anything away from me 😃. Even when I got home around 11:30pm I was all excited and only went to bed close to 1am.

Thanks For Sharing.

Daai Rotax motor is kanniedood.

Nou het ek darem lekker saam gery . Dankie vir die mooi fotos en stories .

Maybe a few take-aways from this trip, some more valid for solo trips maybe:

1. Make sure to take 2 spare tubes, and check them before a long trip - they sometimes chafe where they are stored. Same goes for patch
and solution - and buy that from a reputable bike shop that knows what works
2. Take a compressor - yes, I always said I dont need one, but would have struggled a bit more with only a hand pump this time
3. Don't pack unnecessary stuff like too much clothing, but make sure you take basic tools.
4. Always carry a 2L more water than you think you'll need, and never less than 3L to start a day with. Also have some energy bars,
droewors, etc with you.
5. Make sure you know how to do basic repairs, especially stuff that your particular bike may be prone to
6. Ride within your comfort zone, more so when riding solo
7. Make sure someone has an idea of when you should be where, and arrange to check in at least once a day
8. You have to be able to pick up your bike alone a few times when riding solo
9. Comfort is overrated
10. Don't let others' idea of how things should be done limit you
11. Don't always just ride with a / the same group
12. Fuel consumption can increase wildly when your bike is loaded and you're riding into a strong headwind all day
13. If you're going to spend long hours on the bike for a few days motocross-style boots' hard soles is less tiring on your feet
14. Multi day trips on a bike is not about getting from point A to point B as fast as possible - stop, take photos, make coffee or braai next
to the road.
15 But also don't think that 350km per day is far ;)
16. Carry some sort of lube for changing removing and fitting tyres more easily
17. It doesnt really matter how comfortably you sleep if it's only 1 night, but for a 3+ day trip you want to rest well
18. Unless you're a riding-god hooligan, or riding specifically challenging terrain the choice of tyres is really not important - choose
something that doesnt puncture easily and lasts long, like the Mitas E07's. But make sure you can change that tyre by yourself if you're
riding alone, unless you're riding tubeless
19. A basic 1st aid kit is a must, with some pain killers for when you really might need it

Might still add a few more as I think of it

Actually die 1ste keer wat ek so wild gekamp het, maar ek het beplan om dit te doen - die plek het ek maar gekies op grond van waar ek opgeeindig het. Ja, daar bo, en baie ander areas sal ek ook maar versigtig wees

I loved this RR thank you.
A suggestion for this problem, I wrapped mine in mutton cloth (very usefull for cleaning etc too) and never had a chaffing issue.

Have you not thought of taking some of that slime/snot stuff? I have been saved twice from your kind of trouble coz I had that stuff with me.

I was actually thinking of that - it would not have worked for those big snakebites, but maybe for the pinched holes and that small throrn hole

What an excellent trip report - en in albei tale nogal ook! Your writing skills are so good you can pack in your redecorating job and work online for ChatGPT writing so-called AI copy for them. You know that all that AI stuff is written by humans don't you?
