And Robert's bike has that splitter in the fuel line to the injector, like all 500's have.....

There hasn’t been much said about this second trip on this thread but I’m sure there are still a few spots available …so guys …come join us
Phil signed on in a “bucket list response “ and I signed up to revisit some of the most incredible places I’ve ever ridden ….
So we have been feverishly prepping our bikes ….spending too much money on stuff we probly don’t really need ….but loving it all the way …
The preparation and anticipation in advance of a trip is really good fun …but ….as I’ve learnt ….

I woke up very early this morning and realized that we were 5 days away from leaving for one of the most beautiful places on earth. I am not sure any of the guests can ever be as amped as I am about riding the Kaokoland and Damaraland. I truly have the best job in the world.

I quickly got up and made coffee before I made my way down to my workshop.
We replaced the Unimog's batteries and the new units were being charged. Checked the smart chargers and all seems fine. On a previous tour a dubious battery gave us endless problems, something I won't have the time or patience for on this tour

I have gradually started to pack the tools, parts and equipment for the Cruiser over the last week and I am pretty sure I have everything that I might need.
It is clear that Diesel (my Rhodesian Ridgeback) has already realized that it is that time again and he refuses to leave my side. It breaks my heart every time to leave him in the care of someone else when we go on tour.

@Chantal Burger brought me the files last night and I quickly go through it whilst sipping away the much needed early morning caffeine jolt .

There is a file for each vehicle and trailer (has to be in the designated vehicle in case it gets stopped by the authorities)
Each file consists of the police cleared (and stamped) registration document
Proof of insurance
Road tax certificate
Nam Tourism certificate
Inventory list

There is a file for the crew:
Medical insurance documents
Nam Tourism operator certificates
Certified copies of passports
Visas

The customer file consists of:
Proof of medical insurance for each customer
Certified copies of bike ownership
Certified copies of passports
E-MED registration (in case one of them has to be air-lifted to hospital)

After I checked the files I once again realized that I am blessed in having such a fantastic crew. No stone is left unturned and everything is exactly where it is suppose to be.

I am really looking forward to this tour because of two main reasons
The people and the tracks:
For years I have tried to get people like @Catchy @Runner and @JustBendIt to join us and for some reason it didn't happen. Justin has been there before with Martin and Bertie and I am curious to see how he handles a big group.
I have been friends with Runner and Catchy for a long time and their business and work requirements always got in the way. This year everything turned into fruition and I am truly thankful for it.

Guys like @darthvader ,@Renrew ,and a few other's seem like a lot of fun and their energy is evident on the tour's whats app group. This energy plays a vital part in the latter stages of the tour.

a Seriously special shoutout to @ETS, @Gerryb, @BuRP, @FredK and Johan Liebenberg who toured with us before (some for the 4th time) and the way in which they offer some guidance to the first timers on the whats app group. You will not believe the amount of questions being asked about clothing, spares, tools, etc. Thanks guys.

The tracks will be much more difficult and much more energy draining than ever before. I can't wait to see the riders taking it on.
@hartebees and myself will rotate between the Cruiser and the bike so I will get the chance to ride these tracks myself.

Northern Namibia seems as if it will be hot and somewhat humid when we get there and it is clear that the riders will be tested thoroughly.
We have also made sure that we have booked the camps in such a way that we spent more time at the places we all really like.
We will spend two nights at Marble Camp, three nights at Puros, two nights at Palmwag and two nights at Brandberg.

I can’t adequately describe what a relief it is not having to plan this myself, and worry about the practical and logistical side of things. Going through ever-growing lists in my head at night and checking and re checking routes.

Nothing of the kind this time around :)

For someone that NEEDS to plan for all eventualities, it’s sure a load off my shoulders knowing that Hardy&Crew are taking the burden here. Stress levels are considerably less this time around!

Having seen some prepping images of Hardy and crew, I’m relatively worry-free🤣

More than anything, I’m just looking forward to riding in an incredible place, day after day… on an incredible bike🤣

@Renrew - It did take some convincing to get you to join us - I know you are a very particular person and like to have everything right to maximise enjoyment and minimise stress - just like me

I did some parts of this upcoming trip before with Xpat and Straatkat - it was amazing but also very hard work because it was just the 3 of us carrying everything ourselves - this did limit some places to ride but most importantly makes you too cautious to really enjoy the bike because you know you are a long way and a long wait from any recovery support.

I am very confident that @Hardy de Kock and his crew have done all the 7 Ps (Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance) and I am so moerse excited and looking forward to a proper holiday and brain re-boot for myself.

My bakkie leaves Cape Town at 6 am next Thursday 4 May ... am counting down the minutes

I'm a lazy git.
I'll only drag myself to the airport on the 5th and heave myself aboard.... the rest Hardy & team will do!
On the bike I won't carry an iota more than my Camelback.... the rest Hardy & team will do!
And in camp I'll just laze on my comfy stretcher or plant myself in a luxury chair.... the rest Hardy & team will do!
This leaves me to do the minimum and also carry the minimum - just the bike & me, light & free, riding in one of the remotest parts of the world, one of the most beautiful places on this earth I know of, as part a group which I can choose to ride inbetween with or not because the spaces are so vast.... a dream come true, Bucket List Item anyone?

Yeah, I have read RR's of dudes who've done this 'alone', self-supported, carrying their all & sundry on their bikes - fuel, water, camping gear, cooking stuff, first aid goodies, clothing, sleeping bag, mattress roll, satellite phone, whatever spares they think they may need, toolkits, medicines, hell, the list is endless hence heavy.... I say it again, my RESPECT to them!
That's why I said I'm lazy...... because I don't do any of this, eh, well, it IS ****** to have to do all this yourself innit?
If you don't have to I mean - and one doesn't, as on this trip "the rest Hardy & team will do!".

So, it is all easy going then hmm?
Nah, not really, but it also depends on who you ask!
I've seen Chantal & Hennie at work one full day last year, each driving their respective vehicles (Kitchen-Landcruiser & Unimog) to the next camp - via their 'truck-route' for the day, an easy track aka highway rather than the challenging bike's route.
Eh... NOT!
This route surprised me, no end actually, because it was beautiful, challenging-enough and would make a nice bike-route (and is this year I believe)!
Slow going, absolutely masterful piloting their vehicles over/in obstacles, trimming trees there where the Mog's height requires it, or completely de-touring where this is the only option however requiring packing rocks first then, so as to negate water erosion gulleys.... that's prison-camp labour for you, and don't even think I am kidding here!!!
I had a limp arm then so could not do anything worthwhile to help these two poor sweating hardworking inmates, hardly conducive for my self esteem making me feel guilty.... but not a word, not a single complaint from them, they just got on with it!
This gave me a completely new insight when we arrived at camp, obviously tired and glad the day's work was over and we could relax now, ready to be spoiled by a well deserved drink and then a fantastic cooked meal by the team's efforts, which obviously were still fresh and had to start their work only now..... really?
"Soooo, what have you guys been up to today hmm?" may just be a very valid question to ask yourself sometimes... as the Team also work their arses off!

But, this all is why I like this tour, and join this one again.
We're a group, and only a group-effort will get all of us through - each in his own way, and you WILL be glad that your bike isn't loaded to the hilt but empty, light an as nimble as it can be! 👌
